Cycling For Fun and FitnessOne of the most popular recreational activities in the world is cycling. It is an activity that is enjoyed by both young and old, in large and small countries. Cycling can also be a nice way to get around town without having to worry about were to part, it can be an athletic sport – like the Tour de France – and it can also be a great way to stay fit. Bicycles were invented in the 19th century and since then has become the most popular form of transportation in many parts of the world. In countries where mass transportation is crowded, workers use bicycles to get to work. Of course, children who are under the motor vehicle driving age, use bicycles to have a sense of freedom and for transportation. And, athletes throughout the world compete in various types of bicycle races, including sprinting competitions, oval track competitions and endurance competitions. Cycling is also part of multi-sport endurance events such as the Ironman Triathlon which mixes running, swimming and cycling to create a grueling test of endurance. Bicycle riding has become increasingly popular over the years for several reasons. One is that you can ride a bicycle just about anywhere. Whether you are in a city, town or rural area you can find a place to ride your bike. In fact, many localities have constructed bike paths which offer riders a safe place to ride without worrying about motor vehicle traffic. And, many of these trails connect different areas making a network of paths which riders can enjoy. Another major factor in the popularity is the health benefits. Bike riding offers a great cardio-vascular workout for people. By riding distances on bikes you are building up your endurance, keeping your heart pumping at a steady rate and building up and toning leg muscles. For increasing the resistance, riding bikes up hills and mountains can also be a benefit to your health. However, with all strenuous activities, checking with a doctor before starting is recommended. So, how do you get started with cycling? It’s pretty easy. Most of us have learned how to ride bikes when we were 4 or 5, so even if you haven’t ridden in years, you should be able to pick it back up fairly quickly. All you need if a bike and a place to ride. For new riders, a bike path or bike trail would be a safe place to start. Riding bikes on roadways can be a way to get us places, but can also be dangerous for the riders and for the motor vehicle operators.
