The Key to Making a Home Workout Routine Stick

Getting fit in your home is great. No stinky locker rooms, no self-conciousness, no waiting for machines, and no membership fees! But, the one down side of a home workout routine is the lack of accountability. While someone may learn to expect your face at the gym or people close to you might know about your trips there, typically your home workout routine is your business and yours alone.

For whatever reason, when we are only accountable to ourselves, we are less likely to follow through on something. Having others expect something from us makes us more likely to do them. Perhaps that is why with any fitness routine but especially home workout routines, it is so easy to let that initial determination fall off.

Finding ways to stick with your home workout routine, then, is key. Think about those things in your life that you are dedicated to and ask yourself what makes you stay dedicated. More than likely those are things that you feel you don’t have a choice about. For instance, you are likely dedicated to your job because you need a paycheck. You may be dedicated to your family but for the majority of us, not being dedicated to them just isn’t an option. Dedication to a long standing hobby may now feel like a part of your life, and stopping could seem out of the question.

In order for a home workout routine to really last, you must not make it an option. It has to be a constant, something that is a part of your life. Fitness has to be a necessity for you rather than an option! Schedule it on your calendar and let the family know what times you will be working out. In other words, plan for success.

They say it takes 21 days to build a new habit. If you are just beginning a home workout routine, give yourself 21 days. Make a promise to yourself or anyone that will listen that you are going to workout, diligently, and enthusiastically for 21 days (don’t forget a few days of rest in there!). If you can get past these 21 days, seeing fitness as a true fixture in your life won’t seem like such a long shot.

Don’t give yourself a choice when it comes to your home workout routine. Follow through with your workout just like you pay your bills, go to work, or feed your family. See it as a permanent component of your daily schedule and it becomes much easier to make it happen.

Which is Better, Gym or At Home Workouts?

When you are starting an exercise routine, there are several option available to you. Chances are you like to make informed decisions, and your choice for fitness should be no different. So, how do you decide between, at home workouts, gym workouts, or outdoor workouts? Like anything else you must weigh your options and choose the best for your situation. Aside from the cost of a gym membership, there are many factors that may sway your decision. Gym workouts are great for body builders who require heavy weights that they may not have at home. But are those weights and machines necessary for you, the average adult with fitness goals? The answer is no. You can get the same benefits from many at home workouts. Whether the workout you chose uses resistance bands or your own body weight. If you ultimate goal is to lose a few pounds, or even to get ripped, there are several at home workouts that can do the trick.

With most people, but especially with those who are just beginning an exercise regimen, there is a certain level of self consciousness walking into a gym. If you are like many people, you really would rather not let the general public see you sweat and struggle through a workout. At home workouts completely remove this fear from the equation. When you are working out it is important that you be able to put everything you have into it. When you are worried about people watching you or how you might look, you definitely aren’t getting your best workout.

You might decide that walking outdoors is the right program for you. Walking is a great exercise, good for your heart and your muscles. However season change and it will be very easy to put off a workout when winter hits. While walking, jogging, and biking, are all great workouts, there are times when they just won’t work. For that reason, it is a great idea to supplement an outdoor program with at home workouts. You can strength train to supplement your walking or find cardio at home workouts to replace your walking on days that the weather is less than desirable.

What about convenience? Packing a gym bag everyday is a hassle. When you get off work, you want to go home and stopping at the gym probably doesn’t sound like a great idea. When you can use at home workouts, time and convenience are on your side. With at home workouts you can workout when you have the time, no gym bag required.

Overall, there are benefits to all types of workouts. While using several may be a good idea, there is no doubt that at home workouts have more perks. Because you can do them when you want, in whatever clothes you want, it removes a lot of the inconvenience. Add to that the portability of at home workouts and the decision should be an easy one.
