Looking to Bruce Lee for Fitness Inspiration

The name Bruce Lee conjures images of a sleek and incredibly strong physique. An actor, martial arts instructor, and lay-philosopher, Lee was born in China and immigrated to the United States at the age of 18. It’s then that he began teaching martial arts and soon began starring in movie roles. He became a “cultural icon” and is now a face (and body) that’s recognized the world over. But, in addition to martial arts, what did Bruce Lee do to attain that physique and can you incorporate some of his fitness wisdom into yours?

Bruce Lee can provide some serious inspiration and worthwhile guidance to people who want to turn their bodies into well-oiled machines. It wasn’t just good genetics or film roles that made Lee so fit, it was tireless training and a commitment to good health.

Like most wise fitness trainers, Lee recognized the importance of both diet and exercise.

In regards to Bruce Lee’s diet, he preferred the cuisine of his homeland. He believed Westerners depended too much on animal proteins and fats and neglected vegetables and good carbs. It’s said that his favorite dishes were beef in oyster sauce and tofu. He shied away from refined flours like those included in baked goods and white breads. He avoided all dairy products, ate small portions and more frequent meals, and did some juicing and blending.

Another thing Bruce Lee incorporated into his diet was supplements. He advocated the use of protein shakes, and this was really the only dairy products he consumed. He would add things like wheat germ, peanut butter, bananas, brewer’s years, and eggs to his concoctions. He also is said to have taken Vitamins C & E, Bee Pollen, Rose Hips, Wheat Germ Oil, and Protein Tablets, just to name a few.

As far as Bruce Lee’s workouts go, they were varied and they were intense. He included strength training with weights, boxing workouts and punching routines, ab routines, stretching workouts, isometric training, and of course, martial arts. A well rounded fitness plan, he believed, was crucial in keeping the body fit and the mind quick as well.

Bruce Lee is an inspiration to many. While many of us strive to have it all in regards to fitness, he attained it. On a daily basis, he lived the ultimate fitness life, eating high quality and healthy foods while working out tirelessly. His commitment to fitness was evident in his appearance and his seeming life-satisfaction.

Sorting Through Exercise Programs on TV

You only have to stay up a few hours later than usual to see your television become a fitness marketplace. Sure, you can see commercials for exercise programs on TV at other times of the day, but in the night, they are everywhere. If you are looking for a new workout system to help you achieve your fitness goals, you could get plenty of ideas through these paid advertisements and commercials. But, with all of the fancy marketing tricks, how do you know which one is really best for you?

If you’ve ever watched a 30 minute infomercial, you know how convincing they can be. Within 10 minutes, you can be completely convinced that you need that fancy food chopper in your kitchen or that the latest “lose weight instantly” scheme is legitimate and you must have it! That’s the tricky part about sorting through exercise programs on TV. These companies, Beachbody included, spend a lot of money on advertising. If they don’t, the competitors will. While this could put all of the products on a level playing field, it doesn’t. Not all of the exercise programs on TV are effective and some are simply a waste of money.

Here at Extreme Body Workout, we are biased. We know if you watch an Insanity, P90X, or Turbo Fire workout program (all made by Beachbody), you will be convinced that this is the program for you. And if this is the case, you would be right. You see, unlike some of the other contenders on the market, all of the Beachbody workout systems are effective and completely worthwhile choices. The Beachbody infomercials don’t make our products look good—the products do that themselves.

We use our workout systems and we know they work. Sure, the infomercials and advertisements you see for Insanity Workout and P90X are very convincing but they definitely aren’t misleading. These exercise programs on TV have the potential to change you, your body and your life. Whether you want to lose weight, tone up, or simply stay active and athletic, either of these systems can do the trick.

With any of the exercise programs on TV, it’s important that you do your research. Don’t just watch the infomercial and be convinced—get online and look at other resources. Read what consumers have to say about the products and examine your options closely. And, as always, if we can be of any help in choosing the right system, let us know!

Finding Good Workout Songs

There’s no doubt that the right music can supercharge a workout. You can be on your last leg, ready to throw in the towel when your favorite high-energy song comes on and changes everything. A song with a good beat can propel your workouts and help you work both harder and longer. If you’ve ever tried to workout without music, you know exactly what I mean.

Many of the workout programs we offer here have great workout music. That’s because the people in charge of producing these Beachbody programs know exactly how powerful the right song can be. Chalene Johnson is a great example, always getting great workout songs into her exercise programs. Both Turbo Jam and Turbo Fire are high energy, tough workouts, with awesome tunes in the background.

But sometimes you want your own music. There’s really nothing wrong with turning the sound down on your television and turning it up on your stereo. Changing the music up can be just what’s needed when you find yourself in a workout slump. But where do you begin to look for good workout songs? Your own playlist might not be the right pace for the high powered exercise you want to do.

When choosing workout songs, you need something that is at the right pace and also something you enjoy. A good beat is crucial, whether you are running, doing home cardio, or weight training. Aside from that, the choice is really yours. You want to choose workout songs that will increase your motivation.

If you are looking for some great workout songs consider this list from Fitness Magazine with entries like “Walk This Way” from Aerosmith and “Crazy In Love” from Beyonce. Here’s another great list from Men’s Fitness highlighting the best workout songs of the decade. There are only ten here but trust me, these are some really solid entries.

Workout songs have the ability to change your workout from okay to incredible. Adding a new playlist to an existing workout can breathe new life into your daily exercise regimen. There have actually been studies done that show endurance runners are able to perform better with the right tunes in their ears. Finding the perfect tunes for your playlist may take some work but there are countless lists and suggestions online for you to find. If you already have your own favorite workout songs, share them with us by commenting here!

After P90X, Then What?

Ready for the next challenge?

Ninety days ago you probably thought this day would never come. Actually, ninety days ago, you probably felt motivated and great—getting ready to start the P90X journey. A few weeks in, you may have struggled with motivation and making your P90X routines a daily habit. Three months can seem like a long time when you are engaged in a life changing workout experience. But you’ve made it and you likely have some amazing results to show for it. If you’re like most people after achieving this kind of goal, you’re ready for the next challenge…ready to ask: After P90X, then what?

When you’ve finished the 90 day P90X program, you have a few different options. Many people who initially wonder after P90X, then what, end up doing the program again. Sure it’s easier the second time around but because this system is made to challenge nearly everyone, you can definitely get progressively better results even the second time around.

Another alternative after P90X, then what, is to do P90X Doubles Approach. This approach has you doing twice the workouts of the original P90X schedule. It’s definitely challenging and will only supercharge your already dramatic results. This requires some time management skills as you will be doubling some of your time spent working out. But with that double effort, comes double rewards.

Finally, if you’ve completed P90X for the first or second time and are looking for something new, you can try P90X Plus The Next Level. This program is designed strictly for P90X graduates. If you’re wondering after P90X, then what, this program will definitely fit the bill.

P90X Plus comes with five additional workout DVDs including Interval X Plus, Kenpo Cardio Plus, Upper Plus, Total Body Plus, and Abs/Core Plus. These workouts are not for beginners and are strictly for those people who have finished at least 90 days of P90X and are wondering what to do next. You must work your way up to these workouts as they are a great challenge.

If you are at the point where you are wondering after P90X, then what, you should congratulate yourself. It takes a serious amount of dedication and hard work to get as far as you have. You likely had to overcome some time management issues, motivation problems, feelings of self-doubt, and a sometimes-uncooperative body in order to make it 90 days with P90X. But, you did it. And now, you’re up for the next challenge.
