Eating right and making healthy food choices isn’t always easy. If you’re actively involved in an exercise program like P90X, Insanity, or 10 Minute Trainer, you already know that your nutrition is just as important as the workouts—if you want those results!
But, does that mean you’ll never cheat? Of course not, after all we’re only human. There will be times when you cross over to the “dark side” and have one of those not-so-healthy snacks. But, before you reach for that tempting treat, we thought we’d share some interesting facts that may have you thinking twice!
Oh those delicious, greasy little wonders of fried joy! So good, yet so very bad! Behind the great taste lies some pretty terrifying facts. So what’s so bad about these drive-thru favorites?
A large order of french fries has a whopping 550 calories! That’s pushing the total calories one would have in a complete balanced meal! And, let’s not kid ourselves here, typically french fires are just a side order to a fast food value “meal.” If high calories weren’t enough the really scary fact is that over half those calories come from fat.
8g Trans Fat
Did you know that a large order of fries also contains 8g of Trans Fat? For those who don’t know, Trans Fat is the product of a synthetic process adopted by the food industry to help give foods a longer shelf life. Recent studies however, have shown that Trans Fat is linked to heart disease, high cholesterol, chronic illness and even cancer!
Over 350mg Sodium
Sodium chloride the main ingredient in salt is actually an essential, life-sustaining mineral that our bodies need, but what happens when we consume too much sodium? Well how about life-threatening high blood pressure, kidney stones and bone disorders? This salt packed snack is one you’re body can definitely do without!
We all love it, heck we all grew up on it. Slap some PB and J between two slices and you’ve got lunch! But believe it or not white bread is a bad choice! It’s simply not natural. White bread is made from refined white flour. It starts with nutrient rich whole wheat grain but then is stripped of all traces of the wheat husk and bran, chemically bleached, and then kiln-dried at such high temperatures that any remaining nutrients are completely killed off. There’s essentially no health benefit whatsoever to white bread.
Simple Carbs Suck!
White bread contains simple carbohydrates (as opposed to healthy complex carbs) which means you’re body rapidly digests them causing your blood sugar to rise and then crash quickly there after. So you get a quick burst of energy and then, boom nothing! This leaves you’re body still feeling hungry fairly soon after eating it, because there’s no fiber or vitamins that your body really needs.
Cold, crisp and utterly toxic to the body! Sounds refreshing doesn’t it? According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, Americans drink more than 50 gallons per capita of carbonated soft drinks each year. That’s a lot of soda! But this should come as no surprise, many of us reach for soda daily as part of our lunch and dinner, some even substitute it for coffee as a morning caffeine boost! This stuff is just plain bad news folks…
The Evil Drink From Hell
Did you know that one can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar? Pretty crazy huh? Not to mention all the artificial food color and sulfites, 150 empty calories, and up to 55mg of caffeine! But did you also know that studies have shown that soda is linked to:
- tooth decay
- heart disease
These are just a few of the really really scary foods you should stay away from at all costs! At the very least, if you’re going to eat them make them a special occasion thing. They contain very little of what your body wants and a whole lot of what your body doesn’t need!
