What’s the Point of a Protein Shake Diet?

whey-protein-van-iIt has come to our attention here at Extreme Body Workout that people are asking about a “protein shake diet” as if protein shakes hold the key to fitness and weight loss. Anytime you base your fitness success on a single supplement or food, you are really setting yourself up for failure. Instead of considering a protein shake diet, try simply adding protein shakes to your list of diet tools.

Similar to grapefruit diets, cabbage soup diets, and every other fad diet, placing too much emphasis on one single food is, quite literally, a recipe for fitness failure. When you focus too narrowly on what you are eating the motivation can be high in the beginning.

Something about rules and tightly controlled measures is alluring to humans for some reason. We think if we make hard and fast rules it will be easier to stick with a plan.

While these rules might work initially, the body and the mind will both grow weary of the limited selection and the rules and the entire diet will get thrown out in short order. If you choose to include protein shakes in your nutritional arsenal, do yourself a favor and don’t think of your added supplement as a strict diet plan. Don’t think of yourself as being on a protein shake diet.

High quality protein shakes can serve several purposes in a weight loss or fitness diet plan. They are great for adding protein when you are building muscle. Helping the body to recuperate from strenuous workouts, protein supplements, like those on a “protein shake diet” can give your body the extra protein it needs to repair and build new muscles.

Another great use for protein shakes is convenient meal replacement. I’ve said this before and I will say it again: protein shakes like those sold here make a great on the go breakfast for people who commonly skip the crucial morning meal. Breakfast is an imperative part of a fitness program and protein shakes make the meal palatable for people who don’t like eating in the morning and for people who don’t have time for a regular breakfast.

A protein shake diet shouldn’t exist. A well balanced diet that includes protein shakes, however, can help you reach your fitness goals and do so in a maintainable manner.
