Home Exercise Equipment: A Common Trap

j0422267How many of you have been up late at night to see the newest exercise contraption being advertised on television and feel the marketing genius sucking you in? How many times have you purchased a piece of home exercise equipment only to use it a few times before allowing it to gather dust? We all want to have a healthy body and we all want to look good. The key to knowing which home exercise equipment and which you can pass on is understanding the motivations behind many of the home fitness companies and knowing your own fitness personality.

Like all business owners, makers of many popular home exercise equipment gadgets are out to make money. Most companies can balance this goal with the desire to actually help consumers in one way or another. Oftentimes, however, many of these companies lose sight of the consumer and instead invest thousands of dollars into marketing. This money would be better spent on product development and research much of the time.

Understanding that some of these home exercise equipment companies are focused on the bottom line will help you see through all of the marketing glitz that is often put on.

Next, knowing your fitness personality can help ensure you don’t spend unnecessary money on home exercise equipment. If you abhor cardio, more than likely a treadmill isn’t a wise choice. Likewise, if you have never been one to workout, plunking down hundreds on the latest gear doesn’t mean you will use it. Spend wisely when it comes to home exercise equipment.

If you want to get fit but don’t want to spend a lot of money, your fitness allowance, so to speak, may be better spent on a high quality training program rather than a gimmicky piece of home exercise equipment. Many of the best home fitness programs only require a very small amount of equipment. Things like resistance bands and the P90X chin up bar are great examples of simple and effective pieces of home exercise equipment that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Companies that want you to spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars on their home exercise equipment are often staffed by marketing geniuses. They know how to get you excited about their products and will use this to their advantage. When considering equipment like this, resist the urge to impulse buy and really take your time to consider your options.
