Burn Serious Calories with P90X Kenpo

Tagged: , ,

j03413471One of the many intense cardio DVDs in the P90X system, P90X Kenpo will burn calories through powerful karate moves, leaving you feeling stronger and leaner. A fun alternative to typical cardio, P90X Kenpo doubles as self defense and an overall good time.

Started by Hawaiian Ed Parker,Sr., Kenpo karate is influenced by the martial arts of India, China, and Asia. Similar to P90X Kenpo, the authentic Kenpo karate focuses on using the strength of your entire body for moves like kicks, strikes, and blocks.

The first American martial art, Kenpo karate has gained significant popularity since it’s development. Tony Horton saw this self defense approach as a great opportunity for building strength, balance, coordination, and above all, burning calories. P90X Kenpo uses the same traditional kicks, blocks, and strikes to help you get ripped!

The P90X series leaves no time for you to get bored with the workouts. By varying your routines throughout the week and also from week to week, you are able to maintain interest and motivation. P90X Kenpo is a great example of this variety.

Kicking and striking leave you feeling powerful and strong. The P90X Kenpo workout is a great sidestep from the norm and will definitely get your heart rate up.

Calories burned, P90X style, compared to other programs:

Calories burned, P90X – 600 burned on average
Calories burned, Insanity – 1000 burned on average
Calories burned, Turbo Jam – 700 burned on average

How many calories on average do you burn doing kenpo?

    Staff Reply:

Hi James on average you burn about 600 calories with every P90X workout you do. Including Ab Ripper X by the way. Hope this helps!

  2. Tanisha

How many calories do you burn during the cardio work out?

  3. Jay

I do P90X. There is not way I burn 600 calories doing ab ripper. It is only 15 minutes or so. I have to run 30-40 mins to burn that many calories and, while hard, ab ripper can’t possibly burn that many calories.

  4. anonymous

hey jay, what Staff is saying is that if you do both a P90X and a Ab Ripper X workout in one session, that entire session you will have burned 600 calories.

  5. steph

So 600 each individual workout? Or 600 with a workout plus abs??

  6. Person

If you are less than 20 yrs old, and less than 150 lbs, how many calories do u burn? Still 600?

  7. Meg

On average a person burns 600 cals a workout, it definately can vary from person to person but your calorie burn should’t be too far off no matter what your age. Ab ripper is assigned to specific days with specific workouts. On those days you burn a combined workout total off 600 cals. The other workouts are 600 by themselves. Hope this helps!!

  8. Sarah

what about doubles days? does this mean you burn 1200?

  9. Josh

I am 20 yrs old, weigh 260…how many calories do i burn in the cardio x workout? what about some other workouts too….if anyone has the answer for that.

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Josh,

Most of the workouts will have you burning around 600 calories a workout. Some more than others and that is only if you are pushing yourself during these workouts. As everything in life goes, you only get out of it what you put into it. Enjoy your workouts!

each cardio workout burns about 600 but the muscle workouts dont burn that much right away because with muscle workouts you burn calories at rest when your muscles are growing

  11. Dyna

Amazing at all the misinformation!!! A 260lb person WILL burn more than a 160lb person. Think about it this way, the 260lb person expends more energy at moving eg: such as a leg raise while working out, that would be like a 160lb person wearing an ankle weight. Make sense.. Beachbody needs to give consumers proper info.

  12. ruben

To dyna. Before u start the program u have to Do the fit test and a 260lb person will not pass the fit test. So know before u have a comment. Another thing is, is they give u options to make the workouts harder. You shouldnt be worried about the calories u burn but the nutrition part of p90x. That’s where the weight loss is gonna affect u the most.

I’ve used P90 X for about a year now and love the workouts. I consume no more than 2000 calories per day and I’m finding that I haven’t lost that much weight. I’m 5′10” and started the program weighing about 180-185lbs. I don’t think I’ve lost that much weight and my concern is that I’m not eating properly. I don’t indulge in junk food so is it possible I’m not eating enough? Please Help!

    Hello Bruce,

have you had any gains in muscle mass? This could be why your actual weight on the scale hasn’t changed much. I would get a body fat tester and start measuring yourself once or twice a month. This way you can see that you are losing fat and gaining muscle.

According to the Nutrition Plan, you should be eating about 2400 calories per day. It could be possible that you aren’t eating enough. It’s important to eat smaller portions but more frequently so your metabolism speeds up. Eating very little, 3 times a day, can actually slow it down. You want to be sure you are eating 3 meals and a snack in between each meal.

Another factor could be the kinds of foods you are eating. To get lean, you need to reduce simple carbs and increase protein. Protein helps build muscle which increases your metabolism. Simple carbs (white rice, pasta, potatoes, breads, etc.) are used for energy when we exercise at higher intensity levels (cardio), but any unused carbohydrates are stored as fat. Eating more than you burn can halt weight loss.

Hi Bruce- I think it is possible that you aren’t eating enough. If your body thinks you are starving yourself, your metabolism will slow down. I would slowly start upping your calorie intake- but this is all just based off of what I learned in my college Fitness class

  16. Amy

I am very curious to find out how many calories you burn with each individual DVD workout??

    Thank you!!

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Amy,

it’s about 600 give or take a few. This also can vary based on your own intensity levels. If you are just going through the motions, you wont burn as much and the program wont be as beneficial.

I am 30 yrs old 275 at 5′ 11′ how many calories vs a “fit person” will I burn per workout? Bear in mind I do all reps for all exercises and all dvd’s except for cardio x and I replace that with an extra kenpo x?

  18. Jay

Get a Body Bugg…it will tell you how many calories you are burning at all times; hence saving time asking 100 different forums the calorie loss. And to Ruben…You are quite wrong. I am 300 lbs and was able to do the fit test, and do 3 pull ups at my ”extreme” weight. There is no requirement for changing your life other than WILL TO DO IT.

All you have to do is your best, and forget the rest my friend.

  19. KB

I was also 230# and able to complete the fit test without much hassle. Oh right 230# female, about 5′6″

  20. Lisa

Just started P90X and love it. It really works them stomach muscles. OMG!!!!

  21. jorge

I think I pulled a muscle on my left shoulder while doing the kempo dvd. What should I do to keep on going?

    Staff Reply:

    Hi Jorge,

try and ice it after each workout. Take it easy with that side and it’s really bothering you, go see a doctor.

Hi, I’m 5′4 and 160 lbs. I’m in the middle of week 3 in P90X and have already lost 2 inches! My question is, I usually eat about 1200-1300 calories a day using the “You on a Diet” by Mehmet Oz. Should I cut my calories even more? I really want to lose weight rather than bulk up. I need to lose about 30 lbs. Thanks

  23. Monica

Also, do you REALLY need to do the P90X supplements to see the results that you want?

    Staff Reply:

    Hey Monica,

1200-1300 calories per day for this program is pretty low. The lowest the Nutrition Plan will have you go is 1800, which is for fat loss. I would be careful with doing the P90X with such low caloric intake. Each workout takes an average of about 600 calories from you per day. You need calories for energy. Of course, see what works best for you. If you are dragging through the workouts, it’s time for a caloric increase!

You don’t have to take supplements to get great results if you are eating right and really bringing it with the workouts. A couple of the supplements are highly recommended. For example, the recovery formula helps to reduce muscle soreness after your workout, which you will have. Also, the protein bars are recommended to be sure you are getting the appropriate amount of protein which is important for this program. The other supplement that is recommended is a multi vitamin. Most people take a multi vitamin during a program such as P90X. Theses are recommended items, not required.
