For a workout plan as intense as P90X, there has to be an equally life changing diet plan. In developing the P90X diet plan creator Carrie Wiatt wanted to make a nutrition program that would maximize the benefits of the P90X program. She knew that P90X participators would be seeking big results and would be willing to make sacrifices for big payoffs.
Wiatt is a notable author and nutrition consultant. She developed the P90X diet plan with the P90X participator in mind. She knew that anyone doing the P90X program must be dedicated to their health and their results. She came up with a great eating program that will get you on the right track, developing better eating habits and also seriously improving the results you see from the P90X program.
Many people are tempted to skip the P90X diet plan and just do the fitness aspect. Be warned: your results with only the exercise portion of P90X will be far less extreme than if you include the P90X diet plan. This plan was made to give you results and do so in a sensible program that nourishes your body and won’t leave you hungry.
The P90X diet plan is a 3 phase program. Phase one is the “Fat Shredder” phase where you include lots of protein, necessary in muscle repair and strengthening, and you will definitely need some muscle repair after the first several weeks of your P90X workouts.
This is also where you will relearn good eating habits and destroy unhealthy ones!
The second phase is the “Energy Booster” phase, this is where carbohydrates are increased slightly and fat intake is low. This phase is designed to give you extra fuel for the fire. It is a more sustainable eating plan and can be used as long as you like.
Phase 3 is the “Endurance Maximizer” phase, an athletic diet, heavy on the carbs. Athletes burn through calories at a greater rate than non-athletes. When you started this program you may not have been able to call yourself an athlete, but after several weeks on the P90X diet plan and workouts, you have earned that status and the new eating style that goes with it.
Overall, the P90X diet plan is a sensible and well rounded nutritional approach. Your body needs food for fuel and giving it the right kinds of food is vital when looking for big results. This plan will allow your body to process food efficiently for energy and allow you to utilize the nutrients necessary for muscle growth, weight loss, and overall health.

Hi, I am in week 7 of the program and improving functionally in my fitness. I have always done pullups and resistance exercises. I have been using a weighted vest in some portions of the workout. My question is can I modify the exercises by doing negatives on pullups and pushups once I reach positive failure? I am doing 8-10 reps. I want to do 6 or 7 reps with more weight then finish up with some negatives. My goal is building lean muscle mass. Will this affect my fat loss on the program? Thanks
Apr 06, 2010 @ 13:54:27
Hi Greg,
it’s normal to feel hungry at first if you are used to eating much more than the diet will have you eat. You should get used to it within a week or two, but if not, you might have to make adjustments to fit your needs.

Hello Heidi,
check out the back of the nutrition plan. There are a ton a quick options and even fast food options. If non of these work for you, just try and make good choices. Low fat, limit carbs, drink water.

Hi Ed,
you can modify this program to make it work for you, yes. Since you have experience in this area, I am comfortable saying, go for it!

HI STAFF,
I AM A POOR COLLEGE STUDENT WHO EATS WHATEVER I CAN I HAVE BEEN DOING THE WORKOUTS TO JUST SHED A FEW POUNDS/NOT GAIN WEIGHT. DO YOU THINK I WILL STILL BE ABLE TO DO THAT WITHOUT DOING THE DIET. I MEAN I AM NOT OVERWEIGHT I AM JUST DOING IT TO BE HEALTHY?
Hey Meg,
you can do this program on a budget if you follow the portions approach. This way you can pick and choose the foods you like to make it easier for you, or you can use the approved foods list as a guide when you eat at your school’s cafeteria.

I have just started week three of P90X. I am following the workouts as well as the nutrition guide closely. I started out the program at 200lbs with 32% body fat. I’ve seen the beginnings of fat loss but I am wondering what a realistic expectation is with regard to fat loss in the Fat Shredder phase. Is there are certain percent of body fat I should lose before I move to phase two? I’ve only got the balance of two weeks before this phase is over.
Hello Peter,
there isn’t a set amount to go by in order to move on to phase 2. You can actually stay in phase 1 of the nutrition plan through out the entire 90 days if you choose. Your just have to listen to your body. If you are feeling wasted after a workout or feel like you lack the energy to even get through it, it’s time to move to the next phase. The fat shredder phase gives you just enough carb calories for energy so you wont store any leftovers as fat. The second phase of the nutrition plan will give you that extra energy boost with one more serving of carbs.

Hi, I just started P90X and had a question. I want to get fit but not actually lose a lot of weight, Im 6’3″ and weigh 235. I wouldnt want to to be any less than 230 and would prefer staying the same weight but lose the fat and gain muscle. Is the nutrition plan still right for me if I didnt want to lose 10-20 pounds? Or am I being unrealistic in wanting to maintain the weight I am with P90X
Hello Dan,
not at all! Skip over the fat shredder phase and start with phase 2 or 3.

I am doing the P90x diet closely and am on day 14 of the program. I have started to see results in my abs and back, but I went on pretty much an ice cream, brownie binge so to speak after day 13. will this one night of bad eating really effect me that much?
Hey Ben. Probably not in the long run. I’m sure you felt like you gained 10 pounds that day, but no, you wont ruin the whole 90 day process with one day of sweets. Frequent ice cream episodes will hurt your plans if you want to lose weight, so try and steer clear of the sweets.

hey i am 6’2 170, i was wondering if i should still follow the fat shredder plan religiously with the 1 bowl of oatmeal a day or if i should step it up. I am 16 if that makes a difference, and i am just always craving like a sandwich (whole wheat bread of course, with non fat ham and lettuce) for example. I am, in addition to p90x, doing muay thai a few times a week. I would love to know. Thank you.
Hello Jack,
if you feel like you are lacking the energy to get though the workouts, then you should move on to phase 2. Otherwise, you can stick with phase 1 as long as you want to keep burning fat.

i don’t quite understand the portion part of the nutritional plan. An example might best explain what my question is. Say I have 3 6oz of plain chicken breast. I know it counts as 6 protein blocks, but would you consider the fat on a the chicken breast? say it has 6.5g per 6oz. thats roughly 175.5 calories from fat, would i consider this to be a 1 1/2 blocks of fat? Also I have a protein bar that has 31g from carbs and 20 grams from proteins should I factor both carb and proteins into the blocks?
Thanks,
Steven
Hello Steven,
the nutritionists knew that chicken contains more than protein and that the protein bars contain carbs. They did take these things into consideration, but placed each food item in the predominant category.

Someone mentioned that the P90X Nutritional Plan was similar to that of Weight Watchers years ago. I am wondering if this is accurate? I just finished the 60 day Insanity workout and am pleased with the results….now I’m moving on to P90X!!! I’m hoping to lose 10 lbs and mostly tone my legs and arms. I am very familiar with the Weight Watchers program (used it to lose baby weight after my two kiddos were born) and wouldn’t mind using it again if it would be as effective! My biggest concern is that I won’t be eating enough to fuel my body on the weight watchers program….Any info you have would be much appreciated!!!
Hello Mandi,
I am not too familiar with the weight watchers program, but I can tell you the general breakdown of the diet:
phase 1, level 1:
protein: 5 servings
vegetables: 2 servings
fruits: 1 serving
carbs: 1 serving
fats: 1 serving
dairy: 2 servings
condiments: 1 serving
snacks: 1 bar, 1 recovery drink, 1 snack

Hey how are you doin, I am a college student and I hate to admit I take part in a little bit of heavy drinking. I am almost done the program, and about to start it again. I can see that I have developed abs but they cant really be seen yet, and I also do not follow the diet plan that well, but do take healthy eating into consideration. If I were to do the program once more or do something with higher cardio intensity such as insanity will i be able to loose the belly or is the nutrition plan a must if you are seeking results in the ab aspect.
Hello Anthony,
I think the nutrition plan is a must, especially if you want abs! You need to burn that fat off of your belly to see the muscles you are building underneath. Try and follow he portions approach. This would be much easier for a college student than the meal plan approach. If you want to do Insanity, you will also have to follow that nutrition plan, but I can tell you that this one is a little less strict than the P90X diet. Well, not less strict, but there is more foods included that isn’t “diet” food per say. Just healthy foods.

I am on the p90x diet meal plan and am wondering about some foods… It says you can have 8oz of fruit sorbert, so I bought fat free sorbet but I notice alot of calories and sugar and the same with the non fat yogurt is this still okay? And 8oz seems like a lot for a snack. I am also not working out so I use the am snack that you have protien bar and recovery, I don’t eat those and replace that with a second snack with is normally string cheese is this fine since at theis time I am not working out?

I am just starting the p90x program and as I was reading the nutrition plan booklet I noticed a major discrepancy and now I’m a little confused. I am a phase 1 level 2 and on page 13 of the nutrition guide they give an example of the number of servings of each food category for phase 1 level 2 people. On page 13 for carbohydrates they say 4 servings a day but on the page 15 serving graph it says that phase 1 level 2 people only eat 1 serving of carbohydrates. which is it, 1 or 4?

I am currently on the 5th week of doubles and it’s alot of work. I have been on my own diet of strictly chicken, fish, and broccoli which are all plain no oil or butter. Also breakfast of 4 egg whites boiled every morning. I did eat some vegetables with carbs today because I wanted to add some energy for my PM workout, will this diet work for the remainder of my program or should I consume more carbs? Also I take a multivitamin and creatine everyday and only drink water.

I purchased the P90X program last winter but with 3 kids and a full time job I find it difficult to fit in 6 days of working out. I am usually lucky to get in 5 workouts. Is there a way I could customize this and do 5 dvds from Monday to Friday and take Saturday and Sunday off? I stopped doing the program after a couple of months because if I missed a workout I didnt know if I should just skip that days dvd and go on to the next workout. I love the mix of dvds cardio, yoga, core and weight training just not sure how to get a good result without following the plan exactly I dont want to waste my time.

I started P90x about 2 weeks ago. I am not sure if I am doing the nutrition plan properly. But the first week went good. The second week, I started to slack a little. Since I am only in my 2nd week have I completely blown my results and should I start over. Or since I’m so early yet, I still have time to get great results. I’d like to lose about 40 lbs or so.

I am a triathlete. I am currently in my “off” season which means, I gravitate back to being a runner. I am just starting P90X and am still training for 10ks and half marathons very intensely. I am pretty 1400 calories a day will send me into a coma pretty fast when I’m running 45-50 miles a week even without adding P90X.
What would you suggest? We eat pretty well anyway… lower carbs (must have my Kashi Go Lean cereal!), fruits, veggies, meat…
Thanks,
Lauren

Hello i am in high school and play football and baseball. i am a little chubby and want to get abs. Being that i have to go to school and play sport i can not really participate in the p90x diet plan. So i was wonderin will i be able to get abs or even see results on the outside without the diet plan?

So here is the deal. I am 5’8 295 pound male. I have the p90x program and i would love to use it but there is only one issue. The diet plan I want to follow the diet plan in its entirety but since i have a child and a “picky eater” for a wife she won’t allow me to do so. Are any alternatives from the diet plan that i can do that will end up giving me the same result. My plan is to get get back to my Military body which was a cool 185 lbs and healthy.

well, i just started the p90x workouts 2day, and yeah im definitely sore lol. anyways, im 16 years old and most would describe me as athletic but i still have some fat that id love to get rid of. now i know that teenagers burn tons more calories than adults do because they are growing. Do i still need to stick to the diet plan to the fullest?
Hello Davis,
follow it as closely as you can. I know as a teenager, you probably don’t do the grocery shopping or cook your own meals, but maybe you can show the nutrition plan to whom ever cooks in your house. This way they can keep you in mind when shopping and cooking. Eating junk will only slow your progress or even ruin it all together.

Hello,
I would like to start this program. However, in addition to being a picky eater, I have previously had problems with my kidneys filtering out all of the proteins. My doctor said that I shouldn’t ever go on a high protein diet, even though I’m not absorbing it all, because it will make my kidneys work too hard. It’s not really problem, I’m not sickly or very overweight. In April I stopped stopped cheering (I have been a cheerleader throughout college and high school) and I have put on some weight. Can I skip phase 1 or still limit my protein intake while on it?
Hello Kelsey,
I would do the workouts as they are laid out for you and try your own diet. If you have a problem processing protein, I wouldn’t mess around and put your health at risk. The P90X diet is a high protein diet, so I wouldn’t want you to take that risk. Go online and find an easy healthy diet that you can follow. Be sure to account for the energy you will be burning while doing the P90X. If you look in the Nutrition Plan that comes with the P90X, there is a formula you can use to help determine how many calories you should be eating while on the program. It’s at the beginning of the book, maybe page 10 or 11. You could use that as a guide when researching online or asking your doctor what kind of eating plan is right for you.

i want to do the lean program and then move on to the classic.i work two jobs the first one im up at 5am until3pm. the second job is from 11pm til7:20am. is p90x still doable for me
If you can fit an hour to and hour and a half for working out, and you have the energy then yes. It’s an at home workout which makes it incredibly convenient and you can do it any time you have available. Eating healthy can be hard when you work two jobs. I would suggest planning ahead of time!

I am 6’3 180 pounds. Pretty thin. I can just barely see the outline of a couple abs if I flex them but there is definitely a little bit of a layer of fat covering them. I am just about to start p90x with my goal being to get that “ripped” look. Should I go through the fat shredder phase or skip to phase two right away? If I skip to phase two will I still be able to get rid of that fat? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Hello Sean,
I don’t think you should skip the fat shredder phase, but maybe only stay in that phase for a week or two. Be sure to check you body fat percentage before you start and when think you might want to move on to phase 2. This nutrition plan as a whole is very low carb which will help you reduce body fat, so you will continue to burn fat throughout the entire program.

I am a 24 yr old male and I am 5’9″ I have been doing p90x for 4 months now I am on doubles. I have lost weight and tone shoulders and lets. Having a real hard time with belly fat. It just wants to stay there Is there something I am doing or what. Its getting frustrating. I eat the diet plans in the book. Thanks
Hello Ryan,
belly fat is the toughest thing to get rid of on your body. Usually the last thing to go. You have to keep lowering your body fat percentage and toning your ab muscles. If you are following the nutrition plan, I’m sure you cut out anything white like white rice, bread, pasta, etc. These are the foods that contribute to belly fat.
Hang in there!

I am starting the program and read over the nutrition guide. I am 5’6″ and 200lb. I want to lose weight, not maintain. If I am reading the guide correctly I am to eat 3000 calories a day. I read one of the salads is 2 1/2 cups of lettuce. I am a nurse and work 12 hr shifts. I am wondering how I am supposed to carry all of this food in with me and also if this calorie intake is correct to lose weight.

Hi P90x,
I’m planning on starting P90x on Sunday but I have a couple of questions. I’m 24 5’7 and 135 lbs. I have a feeling that I will have trouble following the nutrition plan. As an example I don’t think I can eat 5 meals a day. As of now I only eat 2-3 times a day. I don’t want to lose weight Will P90x still work for me? My goal is to get in shape, and develop/gain some muscle. I’m generally skinny and I think I eat pretty healthy. Also I bought a recovery drink with whey protein in it. Do I still have to buy 100% whey protein?.

Hello, I’m on my first recovery week, and I’m always hearing that I should follow the diet plan, but i don’t, I eat nothing but burgers and fat food.I’m 18 years old and I’m already in good shape(with eating unhealty) but I’m still wondering, can I still get good results from eating how I am now? Because I don’t want to be doing these intesnse workouts without any good results.(I’m seeing good results already)
Hello Jr P,
for most people, following the nutrition plan is necessary to get good results. You are young and probably still have a great metabolism, but you might be setting yourself up for disappointment if you don’t start eating better. You will get stronger with this program, but if you are one of those people who wants to lose weight in terms of body fat, it just might not happen the way you want it to. If you think about it, you might be eating more calories than you are burning throughout the day and with your workouts, which will lead to no fat.
It’s possible that you could still get great results if you don’t follow the nutrition plan, but for most people, the diet is necessary.

Hello.
I am about to start P90x, but i really cannot keep up with the diet. I am EXTREMELY busy, and do not have time to experiment with different recipes. Instead, id like to eat the same thing everyday, or something similar everyday. I dont mind eating small portions often, but i really cannot start learning how to make new dishes,
is there any way i can achieve P90x results but by using an extremely simple, non-time-consuming plan? I honestly wouldnt mind eating like an egg-white omelet for breakfast, turkey sandwhich on whole wheat for lunch, protien bar for snack, and chicken breast with grilled veggies EVERYDAY.
If this helps, I have an EXCELENT metabolism. Im 17, with only 8% body fat. Im moderately fit, although i do not excersize often (until i will start the p90x)
Givin this information, would going of the nutrition booklet, and starting my own diet like i shown you, be beneficial to me? would i achieve p90x results?

Givin this information, would not using the nutition booklet, and instead start my own plan like the one i shown you above, be beneficial to me? wwould i achieve p90x results.
Also, im trying to decide between lean and classic plan. I would like a toned body kind of like this one. Which one should i do?

Hello Joe,
if you want to eat the same foods everyday, that’s ok as long as you are fulfilling the daily servings. If you want simple ideas, check the nutrition plan in the portions approach for the approved foods list. From here you can come up with some simple meals from foods you know you will eat.
Wow, 8% body fat! That’s great! I think you can get really ripped up if you push it with the weights. Body fat is usually what gets in the way when you are trying to get definition, so you have an advantage here!

I would keep going and if you want better results by the end of the 90 days, go for another round and start the diet from the beginning.

Hi, I go to a boarding high school and all of our food is prepared for us, it isn’t all healthy, in fact it is mostly unhealthy(example: Maccoronni for lunch with green beans), I have the p90x DVDs but I’m unable to keep to the diet program(also do to the fact that I am jewish and some of it isn’t kosher). I spoke to a nutritionist and I am going to be eating healthier food when we have unhealthy food(Example: Bringing vacuum sealed turkey and chicken, snacking on fruit and yogurt, ect…), I want to know if the program will work anyway? I’m doing the first 6 weeks in school and the last 6 at home after school ends, so for the end of it I will be able to keep to the designed diet as best I can. So will it work if I eat as healthy as I can?
Apr 22, 2011 @ 23:00:29
Hi, another question. How should I reenergize after I workout? The formula’s aren’t an option for me, what foods or drinks should I have during the hour after I work out?
Hello Mendel,
it can be tough to eat healthy when you are not in charge of your meals. While you are in school, do the best you can. Keep your portions smaller and try not to eat more than 1 or 2 servings of complex carbs per day. If you can, steer clear of simple carbs (white bread, pasta and rice) and refined sugar all together. Get plenty of protein! Also, be sure to have snack between breakfast and lunch and another snack between lunch and dinner. This will help you to avoid being too hungry at meal time which can lead to bad food choices.
I think you still have a good chance if you try your best to eat healthy. You are young and you body will react quickly to the workouts and not so much to the diet. Older people have to be much more careful with their diets!

I recently started doing P90X to get back in shape. I am 5’6 and currently 130lbs. Recently I was put on a diet for reactive hypoglycemia. Is the P90X diet balanced for someone with my condition, or should I stick with what I eat from my dietician for my health conditions?
Thanks for all your help!
-Darcy
Hello Darcy,
I am not familiar with this condition, but I checked up on some things you can do to avoid an episode. Please check this list over to see if this is the kind of advise given to your by your doctor:
-Eat small meals and snacks about every 3 hours.
-Avoid sugar in all forms. Avoid white refined foods.
-Exercise regularly.
-Eat a variety of foods, including meat, poultry, fish, or non-meat sources of protein, foods such as whole-grain bread, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products-low sugar: milk contains 11 gms sugar.
-Choose high-fiber foods and food with a moderate-to-low glycemic index.
-Avoid or limit foods high in sugar, especially on an empty stomach. Some people with reactive hypoglycemia may not be able to tolerate any foods containing sugar (cane/beet sugar), or high fructose corn syrup.
-Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and highly starchy foods such as white rice, white pasta, potatoes, corn, and popcorn (all very high on the glycemic index).
-Adding soluble fibers (e.g., 5 to 10 grams of hemicellulose, pectin, or guar gum) to a meal may help to relieve symptoms, especially in dumping syndrome.
-Replacing refined carbohydrates with whole grains helps.
-Fats reduces insulin demand and might reduce the severity of symptoms.
Does this look anything like the diet your doctor gave you? If so, the P90X diet follows a lot of the same principals. Refined sugar, simple carbs alcohol and caffeine are very limited if not omitted all together. The supplements might be out of the question for you, but you can still get great results without them. I think you would be able to adapt the P90X diet to fit the standards of your doctors suggestions without compromising your ability to lose weight. I think you can make this work!
Put your dietitians suggestions first, bring in some of the P90X meals if they fit in to his/her plan.

hi i wanted to know if i will get the same results without following the diet plan and just eat healthy and avoid fast food and eating to much.
Hello Raul,
this depends on what your diet consists of. The P90X Nutrition plan is very low in carbs and fats so you can probably get similar results if you keep you diet along the same lines.

I work out in the middle of the country and don’t have a way to heat up food while I’m out here. I have tried to drink protein shakes for breakfast and lunch, but have found that I definitely need solid food too. I can’t heat meat up so i don’t feel comfortable eating some of it cold due to health issues, but I can’t seem to find healthy things that taste good to bring with me. Any suggestions on cold food that will give me the energy I need and have healthy benefits along with my protein shakes?
Hello Craig,
protein bars, turkey jerky and nuts can provide you with protein and energy. There aren’t a whole lot of options with significant amounts of protein, so be sure to make up for then when you get home for dinner.

Hi,
I am on my second week of phase 2. I am not following the P90x diet guide, but I am eating healthy. If I do have something unhealthy, I only eat a small amount. I really do watch what I eat. I just started Shakeology yesterday, and I eat 5-6 small meals/ snacks a day. During the first phase I didn’t slack off with the diet so to say, but I just gave into cravings more. I am trying really hard now to stay as strict as possible with the diet. I haven’t noticed any weight loss, but the routines are getting mush easier. I am wondering if because I was less careful on what I ate in the first phase, that it will effect my weight loss, or if I continue eating healthy, I will lose fat and more muscle will be able to show in these next 2 phases. I am not really overweight, and I don’t have that much fat to lose, just a little extra fat or “chub” that I would be so happy to have gone, and to have nice abs showing!
I really am concerned that because I messed up during the first phase I won’t be able to see any results for the rest of the program. Or if I can still burn fat and get nice abs/ a toned body. PLEASE HELP!
Hello Ali,
some people see a good of weight loss in the beginning, then a slower gradual loss as they get into the program more. On the other hand, some people don’t see any results until the halfway mark. It could be that the slacking on your diet is affecting your weight loss, but it could also just be that you are starting to get into that slower weight loss phase. Just clean up your nutrition a little bit and keep to your routine. You will still see results in the end, just make sure you are pushing yourself. Don’t just go through the motions just to get it over with. Really challenge yourself to do better and better each time.

Hello,
I’m very interested in doing this program but cant afford there multivitamins, protein bars and recovery drinks. will i still get good results without these. and if i were to take the recovery drink. it has creation in it so what happens when i stop? would i lose my results?
Hello Daniel,
it’s not necessary to take the supplements, but they do help increase your results by helping to keep your body healthy. The recovery formula is probably the most important supplement and you should try and get it. It not only helps with soreness, but it helps your muscles repair and build. There shouldn’t be any bad effects when you stop taking the recovery formula. It’s there to help, but wont hurt if you don’t take it.
