Chantal. you are starving because protein shakes have MSG ( glutamate) that increases appetite. its use on lab rats to make them obese. You can substitute by natural protein ( from food) or using nuts (almonds or another one). Very good for cravings.

I am on a 1300 cal intake meal plan right now. I have lost 25-30lbs in the last year and I am now healthy. I started drinking protein shakes once a day in the am right when I wake up...this holds me until 9am I usually eat (oatmeal plain, half a banana and 1 peice of whole wheat toast with peanut butter). I then have a snack protein bar(200 cal) at around 11am and then lunch at 1pm cottage cheese and fruit and then dinner salad and chicken at 5pm and then thats it. But recently I have been starving. I feel like if I don't eat every 2-3hrs I am crazy hungry. Is this because my metabolic rate has increased? should I consume more food? I am nervous about increasing my calorie intake, even though I eat really well?! Does the protien shake make me feel more hungry throuhgout the day? Please let me know!

Thanks!

overall, the best way to lose weight, is not to diet but to live a healthy lifestyle and cut the fast food, is just empty calories anyways that make you feel bloated afterwards and are terrible for your health. Eating the right foods, like lean meats and fish, vegetables, fruits, fiber, wheat, and protein along with cutting fried food instead changing it to boil or other healthy ways, is key to a better you phisically and even mentally.

Hi Linda,

I wouldn't recommend you drink a protein shake for ALL of your meals. You will probably loose weight, but you will also be starving! As the above article states, a protein shake can indirectly help you loose weight by aiding in muscle building, turning your body into a fat burning machine. An increase in muscle will result in an increased metabolic rate. So if you miss a meal, a protein shake would be a great alternative. Or just as an after workout snack, a protein shake can HELP you loose weight by aiding in muscle build. Protein shakes are good, but the right foods are great.
