Does Turbo Jam Work?

With any exercise program, you want to be sure you are getting results. There are some of us who exercise for enjoyment, but the vast majority does it to get fit or stay fit. So, it is completely normal to wonder “does Turbo Jam work?” prior to buying it. You wouldn’t want to spend your money on something that either doesn’t live up to its promises or is simply unenjoyable.

Turbo Jam was created by elite personal trainer Chalene Johnson. Johnson wanted to create a fitness routine that would transform bodies and do it in a fun and enjoyable way. By combining elements of kick boxing and capoeira with hot dance music, Chalene is able to deliver a workout worthy of everyone’s attention. Now that you know what Turbo Jam is, let’s address the question, “Does Turbo Jam Work?”

The short answer to “Does Turbo Jam Work?” is yes! Turbo Jam has been shown to burn up to 1,000 calories per hour. That is huge! Even running at 7 miles per hour only burns 835 calories in an adult who weighs 160 pounds. Burning 1,000 calories or even anywhere near that will get you results that you are seeking in an at home workout routine. While 1,000 calories is on the high end, even if you burn 500 calories on your daily workout you are well on your way to losing a pound of fat a week.

In addition to cardio resulting in dramatic calorie burn, Turbo Jam builds some serious muscle. Whether you are doing the Cardio Party DVD or building strength with the Turbo Sculpt workout, you are training and building muscle through all of the Turbo Jam workouts. So if you are wondering does Turbo Jam work for strength training, the answer is another resounding yes!

One of the reasons we can so confidently say “yes!” when someone asks “Does Turbo Jam work?” is because we know the science behind the program and the infectious attitude that Johnson brings to the entire series. One of the biggest obstacles in a workout program is sticking with it. With the fun and high energy that Chalene puts into the Turbo Jam series, you will learn to enjoy exercise and possible even look forward to it!

You want a fitness routine that is effective and enjoyable. Because Turbo Jam combines some serious calorie burning cardio, muscle building strength training, and hot dance music we know that anyone who begins the Turbo Jam program will likely end in success. We know that once you have tried it and someone asks you, “Does Turbo Jam work?” you will also be able to answer with a confident and resounding:

 ”YES!”

I love Turbo Jam. It’s the only video I haven’t gotten “bored” of. Plus, Chalene is very good at explaining each exercise so that the “laymans” can understand. She’s also very upbeat and helps with motivation (but not in an annoying way). I’ve lost over 20lbs so far and I find that I enjoy my workouts with Turbo Jam more every time I do them.

  3. Staff

    Hey Bailey,

Thanks for commenting on our post. Yes Turbo Jam is a fantastic program, very high energy and keeps you having fun while getting a kick-ass workout!

Congrats on losing that 20 lbs that is quite an accomplishment, way to stick with the program!

turbo jam is effective but i use my own music. their music is boring to me.

    Hi Genevieve,

Listening to your own music during the Turbo Jam workouts is a great way to add variety to your exercises and to have even more fun doing them at the same time. Thanks for leaving a comment, and giving your thoughts for us and others out there who are considering Turbo Jam as their home workout program.

  8. Cortnee

My friend has the Turbo Jam dvd’s and she has been working out to them for about five months. She has lost about forty-seven pounds so far. I got the Turbo Jam dvd’s but I am afraid to start working out because I am 6 months pregnant and I don’t know if I should wait until after the pregnancy to start or just try to start right now. I’m just too excited about it I guess. At least I know it works and either way I’m going to do it no matter what!

  9. Staff

    Hi Cortnee,

Please, please talk to your doctor first! As a mother of two, I know that your doctor can sometimes be overly cautious when it comes to your pregnancy, but that is their job! Turbo Jam is probably too much for you to try and do at this stage of your pregnancy. Do you even have the energy? You are going to start to gain size in your belly very quickly within the next month. It may be hard to maneuver around that thing! Try walking and doing some light stretching. This is the one time in your life when it OK to gain weight. My advice would be to wait until after you have your baby and the doctor gives you clearance to work out.

    Congratulations anyway!

I’m 4 months pregnant and still doing TurboJam – I love it!. I tried other workouts but I’m bored out of my mind with those! I feel I can still handle the fast pace and really listen to my body. I usually follow the lower impact workout even though my body wants to move! I’m not in great shape so I wonder how long I’ll be able to follow it. It would be great if TurboJam or Beach Body came out with pregnancy videos…

  11. Staff

    Hi Melissa,

Videos for pregnant moms is a really great idea! We’ll pass it along to them. It’s great to hear that you’re still eager to get some exercise while your pregnant, just be sure to consult with your doctor for what type of exercises and duration is right for you during each phase of your pregnancy. Good luck with Turbojam and of course the new baby!

How many pounds can you possibly lose with Turbo Jam in about a week with a good diet? and how many times a week do you have to work out a week to get results?

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Evelyn,

That all depends on the person, the intensity they put into their workout, and their diet. I can’t tell you how many pounds you will burn in one week, but I can tell you about how many calories you can burn per workout:

Learn & Burn: 200 calories (approximately)
    Turbo Sculpt: 250 calories (approximately)
    Cardio Party: 350 calories (approximately)
20 Min Workout: 150 calories (approximately)

You should work out 6 times a week, as the fitness guide will tell you.

I love turbo jam! I saw it on an infomercial one day and just had to buy it, it sounded so promising. I started the kick-start that came with the program and its been a week today…. and i’ve lost 5lbs and 4 inches! I couldn’t be more happy with the program and im so looking forward to getting into that bikini for summer! Thanks Chalene for your motivation, and an amazing program :)

  14. Michelle

I thought I should tell folks that I started doing Turbo Jam, and after falling in love with it, I got several of my family members, friends and neighbors to join in. I quickly progressed through many of the Turbo DVDs and then went into Chalean Extreme, which I was getting amazing results with. I have 10 children, am almost 40, weigh under 130 pounds, and am in the best shape of my life. We just found out that we are expecting our 11th child, and this is my 14th pregnancy. I will step back and go to Turbo Jam and Turbo Sculpt while pregnant, and then the bike and treadmill, when I need to slow down. After I deliver, I will be more than ready for “time to get extreme baby!” I can’t wait. Thanks Chalene! I also wish you had a pregnancy DVD – you should make one! I’d order it today!

  15. Row-c

I want to know why I am really not losing any weight. I am 5′3 and weigh 130 lbs….
I use turbo jam wrkouts 5 days a week. I may be firmer and have lost an inch or two but that is it…..am getting discouraged. My problem areas are hips and back side. What does anyone out there recommend. I don’t follow the diet plan but I eat healthy…I don’t eat alot so the required diet in the book is too much food for me to eat….

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Row-C,

People loose weight and get into shape differently. Just look at the above post from Michelle! She is on her 11 child and is in great shape thanks to the Turbo Jam and ChaLEAN Extreme! Perhaps you need to adjust your diet. Take a look at the diet plan that comes with the program. You might be eating healthy foods, but you might not be eating the right healthy foods that will allow you to loose weight. Too many simple carbs can certainly put a damper on weight loss.

I can’t tell by your name, but assuming you are a woman and judging by your height and weight, you probably have a medium frame. You don’t have a whole lot of weight to loose. Don’t get discouraged. Finish the program. Are you following the schedule? If you don’t loose weight as you hoped to, you will have certainly lowered your body fat percentage and gotten into great shape.

Turbo Jam helped me lose 20 lbs between March and May of this year! Then I had to have a break because I was getting too small for my wedding dress. It really it a fantastic workout and I really miss doing it now that I am pregnant (yay!). But I know TJ helped me be in the best physical shape I have been in my life so that when I have my baby, getting back into a more vigorous exercise regime will be easier. I have definatley had more energy, overall strength and muscle tone on my wedding day than every before and TJ was the only workout DVD I was doing, simply combined with swimming and walking. Fitness and losing weight (if required) is about positivity and TJ helped me grab onto that and be happy with my body and now my again-expanding shape.

  17. Yvette

I really love Turbo Jam. I never get bored and I always feel great during and after my workouts. I really enjoy the Turbo Sculpt. I’ve noticed a difference in the shape of my muscles. I know I would probably lose more weight and inches if I cut out my sweets. During the week I’m not too bad but once the weekend hits, I eat cookies, icecream, etc…. My weight can drop dramatically if I do Turbo Jam regularly and cut out my junk food. I’m definitely glad that I ordered it and it’s probably one thing in my basement that will never collect dust LOL !! I LOVE it!!
    Thanks Chalene =)

  18. EVELYN

i love turbo jam !!!! i got pregnant at the yong age of 19 and got depressed all i did was sit around my behind during my whole pregnancy. before getting pregnant i was 119 pounds and im a 5′3 girl but after my pregancy i went up to 150!!! i used turbo jam and am now down to 129 pounds!!! turbo jam came with some vitamin pills and im noticing that they make me crave less food is that what the pill should do??? overall I LOVE TURBO JAM

  19. EVELYN

and sometimes after taking the pills i feel nausea. is this normal ???

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Evelyn,

What supplements are you taking? Supplements can sometimes give you a nauseous feeling if you take them on an empty stomach, as vitamins can too.

    -Erin

im taking activit vitamins for active people. i do eat a meal before taking the 2 pills but i feel like throwing up everytime i take them.

    Staff Reply:

    Evelyn,

I wouldn’t take them if they make you sick. It just might be that your stomach doesn’t agree with them. My wife actually has a hard time taking multivitamins too. She has tried taking them at different times, but they just make her feel nauseous. If you want to continue to take a multivitamin, you should consult your doctor. He/she might be able to suggest something for those who have sensitive stomachs.

I was wondering how long it can take to lose 10 pounds with turbo jam with no diet but just eating healthy and by running? and how much of turbo jam can you do a day or the whole week to see results?

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Jayden,

Chalene Johnson says you can loose up to 10 lb in 10 days if you stick to the workouts, use the weighted gloves, and stick to the diet plan. The Turbo Jam schedule will have you working out 6 days a week, 30-45 minutes per day.

Hi I have been doing Turbo Jam off and on since April of this year. Probably more on than off and I did loose 25lbs during this time, but on June 23rd I had to have breast reduction surgery which put me down for 5 weeks. I gained back 10 of those pounds and just Monday the 3rd I got started back although I still have to take a little easy. I love all the Turbo Jam workouts, Chalene is the best coach and motivator so I know I can lose it again. My goal is to lose down to 150lbs, the weight I was before my 3 beautiful girls came along. I’m at 195lbs now. I do have one question though, how do you fight those nighttime munchies? I try so hard, but the more I tell myself no, the more I want it. It never anything really bad, maybe 6 saltine crackers and some 2% milk but your not supposed to eat at night past seven and feel that it is these things that maybe slowing down my progress because I eat the way I’m supposed to all day long, so any suggestions?

    Staff Reply:

    Hi Alana,

Do you work out right before you go to bed? I know its hard especially with those night time munchies, but if you want to see the desired results you should try to stick to the program as much as you can. :)

  24. Alana

I love Turbo Jam so much!! It has definitely changed my lifestyle and I do a workout sometimes twice a day. I eat good all day long and try not to eat past 7:00pm, but how do you fight that nightime hunger? I tell myself no, but then I want it even more. It’s never anything bad just something like a few crackers and milk sort of snack, but it’s bad after you’ve worked all day to be good. Any suggestions? I’m very motivated to get this under control! I’m 195 and want to be at 150, and I’m 5′9″.

ive been working out everysingle day for the past 3 weeks now and have only lost 3 pounds:( i know im not dieting right, but im kind of watching my calories i dont go more than 1500 a day. i usually do the fat blaster 4 days 2 of those days with ab jam, and once a week turbo sculpt. im getting very discourged so far i saw i lost 1% of body fat, so it that im getting muscle back slowly and not seeing lost weight rapidly? i really wanted to lose 15 pounds before my husband comes back home from deployment, he’ll be home next week, i was lazy for the first 5 months and decided to dedicate myself to work out everyday for the last month thinking that ill lose the 15 pounds. right now i weigh 130 im 4′10 and my son is about to turn 2. How long will it take for me to lose 10 pounds? could i still work out if i get pregant next month if im use to the turbo jam workouts?

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Regina,

1500 calories per day is a good amount, but are you eating the wrong foods? Honestly, you should really cut down carbs to about 1 or two small 1 cup servings per day to see quicker results. Protein is important for muscle build and of course you need dairy, fruits and vegetables every day. 15 lbs is actually a pretty high goal for one month. When I first did the P90X, I only lost 8 lbs in the first month and I was following the diet plan pretty closely. You have to be patient when it comes to weight loss. You are probably building up your muscles which are heavier than fat. I think you need to stick with the program the whole way through and see how your results come out in the end. Keep pushing yourself to your highest level of ability and try and follow the diet recommendations as closely as you can.

I received Turbo Jam as a gift around 3 months ago. Although I really liked it, I kind of messed around and did it off and on at first. Well just this past week I decided to get serious and I ate well all week, watched my calories (stayed between 1200 and 1500) and did the cardio party 3 days and the other 2 did 30-40 min on the eliptical and finished with the 20min Turbo. I lost 5 pounds! To some this may not seem like a lot but because I tend to loose weight very slowly (in addition to the fact that I dont necessarily have a bunch of weight to loose; I’m 5′2 and 135…well now 130 pounds:)) it was kind of an accomplishement for me. I wasn’t expecting that when I weighed myself the other day! Now as I move forward to try to reach my target goal of 120 pounds, I guess I’m wondering if there’s anything else I need to incorporate? I’m not a fitness expert (as a matter of fact I’m a recent college grad so I’m trying to get rid of the extra pounds I packed on the last 4 yrs.) and I’m wondering, other than continuing with TJ workouts, do I need to drink whey protien, are there certain foods that are “thought” to be healthy but that may hinder the weight-loss process that I should stay away from, are there certain TJ workouts that are good to pair together? Now that I’m off to this unexpected great start, I don’t want to screw it up. Any suggestions would be so much appreciated!

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Niki,

I would keep doing what you are doing, but maybe increase your intensity levels. This way you body wont adapt to the workouts and stop making progress. Do you have the guidebooks to Turbo Jam? If so, there is a schedule that you should follow.

As far as your nutrition, Turbo Jam comes with a guide for that too. Just follow that as best as you can, and you will have a better chance to reach your weight goal.

    A couple of side tips:

-stay away from artificial sugars, a little natural sugar is better than the fake stuff. Consuming too much artificial sugar can hinder your body’s ability to process natural sugar.

-watch your carb consumption. Carbs that are not used for energy are stored as fat, quite often in the mid section.

-fats of course need to be limited.

-although fruits are good for you, limit those as well. One or two servings per day should be enough (check the nutrition guide to be sure)

    Good luck!!!

  30. Buket

I have been working out with Turbo Jam for about 3 weeks now and 6 times a week. Now I just had a baby 7 weeks ago and I went from 188 to 160 in 4 weeks then I started This program and I am 155 ONLY 155 But I have lost sooo many inches… I am starting to fit into old clothes… I guess I am gaining muscle but I am 5′4 and want to be 118lbs… am I going to stay at 155 or lose weight soon… dont mid losing inches at all but muscle cant weight that much.. I am really just wondering when I will start losing more fat???

    Staff Reply:

    Hi Buket,

muscle does weight more than fat, so that could be why your weight loss has slowed down. Get yourself a body fat tester. This is the best way to measure fat loss. Stepping on the scale can be deceiving because of muscle gains.

i am really considering buying turbo jam. it looks fun, but is it really hard to learn the moves? i hear all these success stories, but im just not sure. i wanna lose 70 pounds. with dieting and turbo jam, how long do u think that will take?

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Sam,

Turbo Jam is really fun, but it can be difficult. Not to learn the moves, but it’s the actual intensity of the workouts can be tough for some people. It really works you out and burns calories. It’s a great program for people who like to move! Remember, your results are only as great as the effort you put into your workout!

  32. Ellin

I have been working out with Turbo Jam for a while now with a rigid weekly schedule (6 days on and 1 rest day). I am proud I have done everything the book tells me except I have studied nutruition and had a great diet I kept, so I don’t go by the guide (although i have modified it to some extent to make them similar) i have lost about 10lbs in just over a month, I am female 5′8″ and weigh 148 lbs, only looking to lose 10-15 lbs more at the max. Is this something I can use to lose those very last few pounds before getting to my goal or should I consider something a bit more intense?

    Staff Reply:

    Hi Ellin,

If you feel like you need more of a challenge, try the P90X. You will be able to loose those last pounds you were talking about, and on top of that, gain muscle, improve athletic ability and overall performance.

I love this workout.. but one question. I’m 145 lbs and I want to be 130, so It’s not like I’m trying to lose a ton of weight. But, I am worried that I will have saggy skin after my weightloss… what are the odds that that can happen. I do turbo sculpt 3 times a week, so that way I can tone up a bit more. It’s all in my mid section mostly where I want to lose the weight because I had 2 children. Would love some feedback if possible.

    Staff Reply:

    Hi Ashley,

you skin wont get saggy from loosing 15 pounds, don’t worry! You will be toning up at the same time, so you will look and feel tighter.

I have a question. I want to lose 15 lbs. I’m 145 and I have two children. I was wondering if I will have saggy skin after I lose the weight and what the odds are that this can happen with this workout as well. I do turbo sculpt 3 times a week to help tone, most of it is in my midsection since I had the kids and it’s mostly flabby there. I’m worried I will just have hanging skin. what are the chances?

  36. Debbie

I ordered TJ and started using the Learn & Burn a couple of times and really liked it. My back hurt me, so I must not have positioned myself right and will work on changing that.

I do have a question though, I just started a training schedule (podrunner intervals) which is a 9 week program running 3 x a week. You can run a 5K at the end of the 9 weeks. My question is, will it be ok if I do my running AND TJ as the workout calendar suggests? I don’t want to do too much, but wanted to know if anyone else is running and doing TJ.

I am considering purchasing the Turbo Jam program. I weigh 294 right now and need to lose over 100 pounds. I am a fairly active person and enjoy aroebic exercise, but is this the best program to begin with at my size? Or is there something different you would suggest?

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Sarah,

if you can handle an aerobic workouts, Turbo Jam would be a good start. This program is fast paced and will get your heart rate going for maximum calorie burn. If you don’t think you can handle 30 or 40 minutes of cardio exercise, try the 10 Minute Trainer. This will give you an all around workout in just 10 minutes.

  38. shoaib

I noticed many women trying TJ. I was wondering if this workout program will be as receptive to a guy like me. I am 5′10 and weight around 200 lbs. I want a workout that will make me sweat and feel healthy, not just build muscle. I would like to lose 40 lbs. Do you think I could do this with turbo jam in a few months?

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Shoaib,

40 pounds in three months is very ambitious and would take extreme effort, dedication, and nutritional discipline. Your results are only as great as the effort your put into your diet and workouts. Turbo Jam is a great fat burning program that will certainly whip you into shape if you keep up with it.

    Good luck!

  39. Michelle D.

I’m nearly 32, 5′4″ and 130 lbs. I’ve been doing Turbo Jam (body sculpt and cardio party) 5x a week for a month now. I just noticed that I didn’t change a bit ever since I started this program. How many pounds should I have lost for a month doing this work out? I’m not on a diet plan but I watch my food and avoid carbs as much as possible I can. How many months should i give turbo jam to work for me before I quit this program? Is there a time frame that i need to observe? Thanks!

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Michelle,

I would see the whole program through and try and follow the diet that comes with Turbo Jam. If you are working as hard as you possibly can and have no results by the end of the program, you might need to try another program. It could be that your body is just too used to the workouts and a change in your diet and exercise might spark a change with your body.

  40. huere

I would like to know if this program would help me workout my stomach area that is like dropped and hanging, from when i had my daughter and gain 120 pounds like 7 years ago. And also how many days would you suggest me working out for a better result?

    Staff Reply:

    Hello Huere,

this program will work your midsection a great deal. Not only with the ab and core workouts, but every time you work large muscle groups, legs and back for example, you will be slimming down your stomach. Track runners usually have great abs, but hardly ever do actual ab workouts. It’s because their legs muscles are always working. This workout is 6 days a week, with the 7th day being a optional rest or stretch day.

I am finishing P90X and just bought Turbo Jam for my next workout series. P90X is an extreme workout. Will this deliver the same type of results? I don’t want to lose any muscle I’ve gained.

    Staff Reply:

    Hi Heather,

P90X does work on your muscles a little more. Turbo Jam is more of a cardio based program. You don’t have to change your plans for Turbo Jam, maybe just add some resistance on the side to keep the muscle you’ve gained.
