As we enter the middle of autumn, the produce departments at local grocers change. Vegetables and fruits are always a healthy addition to your diet plan. Knowing which varieties to select only ensures you are getting the best fruits and vegetables for the season. Fall fruits and vegetables are some of the healthiest of the year. Fall fruits and vegetables are rich in colors and nutrients. Although your location affects what you may be able to find at the store, fall is generally a great time to try new varieties in the produce section.

Although you may not enjoy every one that you try, being open to the possibility will encourage healthier habits.

    Fruits are an essential part of a healthy diet. These are full of antioxidants and low in calories and fat content. A healthy diet should contain all the seasonal fruits as a single fruit may not supply all the nutrients required. The following are some of the advantages of having fruits in your diet:
    (a) Some fruits like guava, oranges, lemon etc. contain vitamin C, which is a very good antioxidant which helps to fight the various free radicals produced in the body due to different oxidative damages. These free radicals cause various diseases like cancer and leads to aging.(b) Fruits are very low in calories and fat content. It makes fruits an essential part of a healthy diet.(c) Fruit juice is also beneficial to the body as it supplies instant energy in addition to all the benefits of raw fruit.(d) Fruits contain about 90% — 95% water. So eating fruits help to eliminate the various toxins and wastes from the body.(e) Fruits are beneficial to the persons suffering from heart disease or high blood pressure as these have a low sodium content but are high in potassium.(f) People who want to lose weight may go for a fruit diet. It may contain different fruits or a single type of fruit such as ‘grapefruit’.
    (g) It is better to consume whole fruits than fruit juice because the whole fruits contain fibers which act as a laxative and helps to reduce constipation.
    (h) Various dried fruits like dates, raisins and different nuts are also beneficial to health. They supply instant energy and contain different essential vitamins and minerals.(i) It is always better to consume a whole fruit with it’s skin, if possible. The skin contains many essential nutrients and is also a very good source of fiber.
