Does P90X Work? Common Reasons Why Some People Aren’t Getting the Results They Desire
If you’re looking for a great new fitness program and you’re wondering, “Does P90X work, really?”, wonder no more. The answer is an absolute yes; however, as with any fitness plan, you have to commit to the program, set realistic goals and follow the nutrition plan that’s provided with the P90X workout plan. The following FAQ’s will give you more insight to the question; does P90X work?
Does P90X work to burn fat quickly?
Yes, P90X does work to burn fat quickly – If you stick to the P90X nutrition plan, as well as the exercise plan, you’ll see a noticeable reduction in your body fat percentage well before the 90 day program is over. Those people who throw themselves into the exercise program and ignore the diet will not see such impressive results.
How does P90X work to burn fat?
The P90X program is designed around muscle confusion. It provides workouts that target all areas of fitness. The variety provided in this program keeps you from hitting the weight loss plateau, which generally occurs after the first month of training, when your body becomes accustomed to your workout plan and results become less noticeable. P90X also increases lean muscle mass and it’s been proven that each pound of muscle in a person’s body burns more than 10 calories a day while at rest. Throw in a proper nutrition plan, and you’ll become a fat burning machine! However, if you decide to only perform the workouts you enjoy the most, or you choose not to follow the nutrition plan, you won’t get the results you were hoping for when you purchased the P90X program.
Does P90X work for all ability levels?
P90X can work to help people of all ability levels achieve higher standards of fitness. Of course, if you’re new to fitness, you will need to modify some of the exercise programs to make them suitable to your abilities. If you’re already in great shape, you’ll likely train with increased intensity to get maximum results from the workouts provided. Regardless of your level of fitness, you’ll get better results from any program if you set realistic, achievable goals. One of the biggest pitfalls in following a program like this is having unattainable expectations, which may lead to burnout and ultimately, failure to complete the program.
Does P90X work to improve athletic abilities?
Actually, P90X is tremendously helpful to athletes who are seeking an edge. P90X’s unique program of weights, cardio, stretching and plyometric training provides athletes with all of the elements necessary to excel in sports. Strength, flexibility, agility and endurance are all highly valued athletic skills that are developed using P90X. Again, to ensure that athletes get the best results possible from the P90X program, they need to fully commit to the program for at least 90 days. Those who don’t commit; those who pick and choose which parts of the program they want to a follow typically don’t get the results they want to see. Please see the following article for more details on How Power 90X (P90X) Can Make You a Better Athlete
So, to answer the general question, “does P90X work for everyone?” The answer is no, it doesn’t. P90X only works for those people who are dedicated to the entire program, who set achievable goals for themselves and who follow a healthy nutrition plan while following the P90X workout program. The better question to ask here is, “can P90X work for everyone?” Absolutely – as long as you are medically able to perform moderate exercise, P90X can be the path to achieving all of your fitness goals.

how old do you have to be to try the
program
Hi Lea,
There is really no age restriction. If you can handle it, go for it! First you might want to try the fitness test:
http://www.beachbody.com/text/products/programs/p90x/p90xFitTest.pdf
If you can pass, you are in pretty good shape and are ready to start. If not, you may want to try the Power 90. This program has the same ideas as the P90X and is a great stepping stone.

Before I purchase the system, I waas wondering if the nutrition part is suitable for a diabetic. I have to really watch my carb count to keep my sugar levels low. I noticed that in the nutrition section it says the addition of extra carbs to maximize energy, will this effect my sugar level?
Thanks, Mike
i’m a user of p90x and i recommend this product. i was completely out of shape. im 23 years old 150lbs 6′1 an upper body thats awesome and my legs probably weigh in at 30 pounds together. ha. but just after 10 days so far i feel freaking 18 its awesome and working out with tony you always get your legs involved somehow, i cant wait to kick ass in sports this summer! its been 100% effective and i barely follow the diet i just dont eat icecream, drink soda or eat sweets constantly, other than that i eat what i want and alot of it.
Hi Robert,
I would definitely talk to your doctor about this. If you want to try the program for 30 days, you can look over the Nutrition Guide to see if you would be able to make some substitutions here or there to make it work for you. Perhaps you can have your doctor take a look at it too. If you find that it might not be right for you, return it within 30 days for a full refund (minus shipping).

Hi Elias,
A very common question we get is, “what P90X accessories are recommended to get started with the program?” The P90X program requires that you use either free weights or resistance bands, this is an absolute necessity. If you already own free weights you can use those, if not we offer resistance bands geared to both men and women. The Resistance Bands (Men) kit contains 20lbs, 30lbs, and 40lbs, bands, The Resistance Bands (Women) kit offers 15lbs, 20lbs, and 30lbs, and the Resistance Bands-Complete Kit has all the bands from Men and Women, plus 4 additional bands for even more variety. Resistance bands provide tension throughout the entire range of motion requiring you to remain stabilized, this helps to engage more muscle groups and increase coordination.

Another item on the list of recommended P90X accessories is the Manduka Plyo / Yoga Mat. It’s no ordinary mat! Hey Danny,
We’d recommend that you start upping your weights, right at home. If you feel you can handle it, it’s a good sign that you need to start upping the weights and lowering the reps during your P90X workouts.
We can’t really recommend substituting in most situations as we can’t really be certain what type of a personal workout you’d be doing and the key to P90X is to really follow the system as closely as possible for the best possible results.
I am on day 17 of the P90x and already feel a million times better. I am not following the diet to a T. Some of the food suggested in the Nutrition plan takes too long to make and I am no chef. So I have been doing my own dieting (staying under 1800 calories a day) I have been drinking a meal replacement shake in the morning, a light chef salad at lunch, a protein bar before my workout, and a protein smoothy shake with one banana or a cup of strawberries after my workout. I have lost about 8 pounds already, but I expect I would lose more if I were not replacing fat with muscle. Any suggestions? Am I hindering my results by not following the Nutrition plan to a T?

Well Jeremy I got to tell you that a lot of time and effort went into the creation of the P90X Nutrition Guide, and really, if you want the best possible results, buckling down and following the guide is really our best suggestion. However you’re not doing too bad on your own. It sounds like you’re getting great results so far, to be safe, crack open the guide!

Hey John,
Its really tough for us to say “yes” to making any substitutions in the program. But if you just simply refuse to do Kenpo X then yes Plyo would be a pretty good alternative.
IT’s not going to engage all the same muscle groups as Kenpo, but it will give you a similar cardio workout if not a bit more in that department.

Hi Eric,
You can continue with whatever workout you’re currently doing but I’ll tell you, it will be difficult. you have to keep in mind that P90X consists of 1 hour long intense workouts 6 days a week.
For most people doing anything else on top would be extremely difficult. Hope this helps give you a better idea of the program

Hi Jason,
It should be alright for most of the routines however, what’s unique about the P90X Chin-Up Bar is that it’s not locked in the doorframe like other bars. It actually comes out and away form the frame allowing you to perform wide pull ups and chin ups as called for in the DVDs.
With all that being said, if you already have a chin-up bar you can make it work.

Is there a way I can still follow the nutrition plan, but substitute the meat for other foods!?

Ashley,
We’ve had many successful P90X-ers who are vegetarians. Any of the predefined dishes in the “Meal Plan” approach can be modified with a little creativity.
What you’ll want to do is take a good look at the “Portion” approach here you will have a table that breaks down the necessary portions of calories you’ll need per day, in categories such as: protein, fats, carbs, etc. In this section you will also find lengthy lists of suggested foods in each category. These include soy based foods, tofu, cheese, nuts, and much, much more.
P90X is flexible and while you may be consuming a bit more carbs to get the protein you need, you’ll still be able to do very well with the program being a vegetarian.

Tyler,
You’ll find that the P90X Nutrition Plan is not a diet in the sense that you’d be starving yourself to lose weight. In fact most people at first have a hard time adjusting to the amount of food the plan calls for!
The plan really does set you up with good healthy food choices. We would not recommend eating pizza, and ice cream to try and gain weight, it’s just not good for your body and will not give you the proper nutrition and energy you need to perform at your best. You’ll find everything from macaroni, to potatoes, to steak, to bagels in the guide. It’s just a matter of eating well for your heath. If you find that you need or want to eat a little more than is called for in the guide—go for it!
As for weights and bands. You can use either, but often times users say that they like to use a combo of both as some routines can benefit from free weights while others are great with the bands.
Hello,
Yesterday was my first day of doing core synergistics, unfortunately, I had 18mins left and couldn’t finish since my head started pounding as I engage my core muscles. Am I engaging too much or is this normal? I had to stop for the very first time since it felt uncomfortable. Should I redo core synergestics today and do kenpo x right after? I’m doing the Classic Workout of Phase 1 and I’m on my 4th week. I already lost 15lbs. I was 148lbs 5 flat and now I’m 133lbs. I could do all the workouts with ease but I’m finding core synergestics troubling, due to the headache I encountered.

Hi Al,
The headache could be a result of dehydration. Make sure you are drinking enough water while working out, especially during core synergistics!
Don’t give up on it! If you couldn’t make it through the first time, that’s ok! Keep on your regular schedule and when it comes time to do this workout again, try and make it through a little further. I understand and know that some of these workouts can be really tough.
Work through them as best as you can and stay on track!

Hi Anthony,
Not everyone is built the same. People who are already physically fit can expect to build up their fitness level, and those who are not in great shape can expect to loose weight and gain muscle mass they may not have had. Results can vary due to your current body type, but with the P90X, you can only improve yourself.
Working out, loosing weight and building muscle through a fitness program is always a unique experience, and your individual results will naturally vary from the results of someone else.

Thanks Mike. I think that’s exactly my problem. I never take water breaks during my workout. I’m a lil scared of gaining water weight since I have love handles but I’m already forming my upper 4 pack and still trying to get the lower 2 to show. I’m switching core synergestics for my workout for today and x stretch for tomorrow. I’m eager to finish core synergestics today. I’ve drank3 glasses of water so far and it’s already 2:38pm. I hope this water solution gets rid of my headache.
Thanks again!!!
Update: Water helped me during core synergestics last night. Finally finished the full workout.

Hi Derick,
P90X will in fact help you loose weight, if you are in that position. But, The system was not designed solely as a weight loss program. In fact, its main goal is to get you into great shape, build muscle, and increase your overall stamina and agility. The great thing about P90X is that the nutrition aspect of the program is very flexible.
The P90X diet provides you with the right combination of foods so that your body has the energy it needs during the program. It’s broken down into 3 phases.
While P90X is a 90 day workout you may decide to alter your choice and timing of the phases for what works best for you. In your case you may opt to decrease the time you spend in Phase 1: Fat Shredder, or you may decide to skip this phase all together, and move right into Phase 2. We have had several individuals in a similar situation as yours and bypassing Phase 1 was the right choice for them.
Phase 1: Fat Shredder
This stage of the P90X diet focuses on a high protein, and is designed to rapidly reduce your body fat percentage. As this happens your available energy should also decrease. So, you shouldn’t extend this phase unless you aim to drop more fat, and if you feel like your energy level is enough to push hard during your daily workouts. If you already have low body fat and looking to gain more energy you should consider shortening the length of this phase. To determine your body fat currently, and during the program you may want consider purchasing our Body Fat Tester.
Phase 2: Energy Booster
This phase of the P90X diet is a more balanced mix of carbohydrates and protein with a lower amount of fat to achieve additional energy for performance. If you’re feeling energized, and making progress you are free to continue this phase for as long as you like.
Phase 3: Endurance Maximizer
Is an athletic diet An athletic diet of complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, and lower fat with the emphasis on more carbohydrates. It should only be initiated if you are seriously pushing your body. This stage must be earned. On the flip side some people hesitate to ever enter into this phase in fear of gaining weight from the additional carbs. Surprisingly they find that once they try this phase of the P90X diet they end up with even more energy allowing them to really “Bring it!”.
At this point, there is quite a following and a lot of great success stories from the P90X community out there. The reason for it’s success is because the system is not only effective, but flexible as well. If you stay dedicated you will definitely get the results you’re looking for. We hope this helps shed some more light on the program, if you have any further questions please feel free to contact us at any time!

Hi Jake,
P90X will definitely help you increase your mass. Once you get your P90X package, you will receive a Nutrition Plan and Fitness Guide that will help you achieve your desired results. If you are looking to just gain mass, I would recommend skipping the Fat Shredder phase of your Nutrition Plan, that way you can maximize your mass gains. Phases II and III will add a lot of carbs and other mass building nutrients to your diet.

Hello Ailyn,
We love the fact that you are dedicated to the program the way that you are. We just want to make sure that you don’t over exert yourself in the process. You are going to be in top physical condition after P90X, just make sure you don’t hurt yourself in the process. If you feel faint and need to stop your twice a days, stop immediately and go back to just one a days.
-Nate
I finished p90x with great results. went from 16% bf to 9 % bf. is it possible to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time? 99% of the experts say no. most say u can maintain the muscle and lose fat. if so ,how much could one expect to gain in 90 days and how many calories should i eat at 160lbs? grams of protein? and so on. p90x is a great program.

Hi Dave,
Congratulations on the success of your P90X results. For your first question, the way to lose fat and build muscle at the same time is through your diet. The less fatty foods that are digested into your body, the less fat you’ll have in you. The remaining fat will decrease while you’re building that mass in the gym or while your using P90X Plus. So in essence, it is possible to gain muscle and lose fat at the same time, as long as your doing it the right with through your diet.

Have purchased the programme. Want to start it but am going to commit fully to the Phase II Energy Booster plan however my issue is I work shift work and live in an accommodation camp that provides all my meals. Any suggestion how I can incorporate the level I Phase II meal plan in with their dining plan? I have asked the catering manager if he can possibly incorporate it into the meals. He wants me to email him what I want. And do I follow each day of the plan every week? So day one – seven is every week for 15 weeks?

Hi Brian,
I do believe that if you are up for the challenge, then you are ready for P90X, especially if you breezed through the tests. Remember that P90X is an intense workout and is not for the faint at heart. You will only get out of it what you put into it.
Once you start P90X, since you are on the skinny side you may want to skip phase I and go straight to phase II. The amount of time will still be 90 days only you will do phase II twice.
I do believe you are ready for P90X and now all you have to do is prove me right. Keep us updated and don’t forget to “Bring It”.

I just finishing up my 7th week of p90x. I have lost 20 some pounds and I am seeing a big difference in my body. I see difintion and growth in my muscles and the top abs are showing. I broke my back and shattered both ankles in an accident 2 years ago. After 7 weeks alot of the pain and stiffness are gone and my workouts are getting more intense. I try following the diet plan as close as possible. Questions: Can a protien shake replace one of the main meals in a day? Will the lower abs start to show more after the rest of the program, or start to show with more weight loss?

Hello Bryon,
First off congratulations on the weight loss and muscle gain. Second, remember back injuries are nothing to play with so if the pain and stiffness comes back, ease off a bit and take caution. Better safe then sorry.
Now to the questions. I wouldn’t recommend taking a protein shake as a meal replacement, only because it doesn’t have all the nutrients that a “true” meal replacement shake would have. Look here;
http://www.extremebodyworkout.com/p90x-products/meal-replacement-shakes.php
for our meal replacement shakes. You will get some of the nutrients but it won’t be as effective as eating a real meal or having the meal replacement shake.
Lastly, your lower abs. They will start to show with a combination of your diet and workout. The diet is going start eating away at the fat around your lower abs and then the workouts are going to build up the muscles there and make them pop out. So you are definitely on the right path to getting that body you’ve been working towards.
Keep us posted on your progress.
-Russell

Hi Karen,
Before I answer this I just wanted to say, you are definitely doing your thing. All the things you’re doing alone, have made you a remarkable person. As far as the program, I know it may seem hard but you are going to want to find that extra half hour and workout to a full hour of P90X a day.
I only say that because the workouts are so rewarding, that you might not get the full rewards if you try to break it half. Some of the workouts have a building up point to them that is equivalent to warm up exercises. If you split up the hour workouts, you will be just doing the warm ups to some workouts and then when you’re ready to do the second half of the workout, you start off in full force action, with no warm up. So my recommendation is to try and find that extra half hour so you can do a full workout. Keep in mind that all the workouts are not a full hour so that will help you as well.
Good luck with all you have on your plate and I hope i was able to shed a little light on your question.

Hi Jacques,
P90X Lean is an alternative program to P90X classic. It’s for those who want a more cardio-based and slightly less intensive program. It’s focus, as per the name, is on developing lean body mass. It is not a separate product, it’s a different route you can take with P90X. These approaches are outlined in the fitness guide that is included with your P90X.
P90X Lean will be perfect for you. My wife did the same Lean program because she liked her size and didn’t want the mass that I wanted to put on. So, do the P90X Lean program and you will be on your way to the body of your dreams.

Hello John,
Working out, loosing weight and building muscle through a fitness program is always a unique experience, and your individual results will naturally vary from the results of someone else. The more overweight you are, the more challenges you’ll be up against, typically in the areas of stamina, flexibility, etc. That being said, we recommend that you pace yourself overall and gradually make exercise a real part of your life.
Chances are you’re not quite ready for P90X yet, and that’s OK! In time, with dedication to improve your health and fitness level, you’ll definitely get there. I suggest you start off with one of our other programs that are less intense and work your way up to P90X. Power 90 is a great program and is the perfect stepping stone to P90X. We offer a 30 day money back guarantee if you decide it’s not right for you. We look forward to getting you started soon and we wish you the very best in your endeavor to becoming a healthier you!

If you use P90X AND add any other cardio to your workout routine AND get rid of all foods that pack on pounds, then you should see the weight fall off quickly. Remember, you must have a balanced diet in order to lose weight properly, so follow the Nutrition Plan as close as possible. Keep us posted.

Im going to order P90X soon im just waiting for school to finish before i get cracking on it. Im 5′11 and 166lbs, im not totally out of shape i still play sports and lift weights whenever i can, but i have been in better shape. I want to put on 15-17 pounds of muscle while still being able to get ripped in 90 days, can P90X help me achieve this goal or is this a long-term goal? Secondly, would i still be able to acheive the desired results if i have a few beers once a week? or will it hurt my chances of getting that beachbody? Also, would P90X also help me become a better athelete ( running faster, Jumping higher, agility and speed etc.) or do you think doing other athletic trianing excersices along with P90X would be best? Lasty, would you reccomend the free weights or the bands for the workouts?

Hello Sharma,
Whew!! That was a mouth full, let’s see what I can do.
First. Everyone’s results will vary. No two bodies are the same and putting on that much muscle weight is not guaranteed. What is guaranteed is you will get out of it what you put into it. Some people just go through the workouts not giving it 100% and those are the ones that will not receive the full benefits from this program. Those that do “Bring It”, those are the ones that will get their desired results. It is possible to get what you want, but you have to put in the work, DIET INCLUDED!!
Second. As much as you may want to have a drink every now and then, I would recommend staying on a strict diet until you start to get the results you want. Now of course you can have a drink every now and then, that is fine. Remember though, you get nothing for free in this world. You will have to work even harder in your next workout to knock it off.
Third. P90X alone will not make you a better athlete. It will not help you make a basket or kick a goal or catch a football. It will however help you get into the best shape of your life so you can attempt to do those things. It will help you with all of those things you mentioned, but there is no true substitute for becoming a great athlete then to actually become involved in that sport.
Lastly. I would recommend resistance bands and here is why. Resistance bands have a unique way of working out your muscles; different from those of a dumbbell, and the difference is what makes resistance bands so great. Unlike dumbbells, bands have the ability to provide resistance through your whole motion, resistance that will challenge muscles you normally would not challenge with a normal dumbbell set. There are also literally hundreds of workouts you can do with resistant bands that will provide your upper body with great strength, you can also do exercises with your legs too. No only do they workout your muscles better, but they are also less expensive and easy to travel with. Have you ever gone on a business trip, wanting to take your dumbbells with you but could not because they are just too heavy to pack? Well with resistance bands you do not have to worry about weight and they will fit in just about anything, so you can continue your routine where ever you go. No matter how fit or strong you are, there is a resistant band for you.
Hope I helped you with your decisions. “Bring It!”
-Russell
I am just wondering if there is some recommended alternatives to the P90X recovery formula??? The exchange rate is quite high (i’m in Canada) and would just cost an arm and a leg to order and have shipped.
Also, would a normal protein bar suffice in place of the P90X Protein bar?
hi,
I have been doing the P90X program for two years and everytime I take a break and start at day 1 again my results are even better.
I have taken a couple months off from training due to a pulled muscle in my glutes and have gained about 15 lbs.
Do you think if I start the program again I will get the same ripped results? I plan on doing the 90 days again and then purchasing the P90X plus. Oh and I’m 46 yrs old.
Thanks
Diane M
I havent worked out in a while. I’m 6′ 260lbs. I bought this product and obviously its not gonna do the job it 90 days no matter how hard I work. The other question I have is how much space am I gonna need to do these videos? Also I’ve never really been a skinny kid always chunky and I could never get past that. I’m hoping this program will push me past that barrier. I’m excited to get started.

Hello Gabe,
I’m going to tell you four little words. YOU CAN DO IT! Gabe do not feel like just because you’ve always been a little bigger than most that you can’t get in the best shape your life right now. It is a process and it will be discouraging at times, but your rewards will be well worth the struggle. P90X isn’t just a workout program, it’s also a full force diet as well. There is a Nutrition Plan that comes with the workouts and if you are serious about losing weight, then you will be serious about following the diet as well. Tony is going to put you through an intense workout and he will push you to your max. It’s up to you to take advantage of this program and make it work for you.
Oh and don’t worry about the space, you won’t need more than your living room or bedroom space to do these workouts.
You Can Do It!

hi. my p90x arrived and i’ve read through the materials and my goal is to start april 20. my question is this, i’m going to do the phase 1 / level II fat shredder approach with p90x, but there only appear to be 7 days worth of meals. are there other recipes or meals that are outlined? eating the same thing each week does not seem right to me. is there a 3 or 4 week meal option? thanks for your help on my journey to bring it!

Hello Jacques,
The Nutrition Plan is simply a guide for you to follow and then make your own. The reason we give you portions and substitute foods is so that you can make a meal plan that is all your own. We don’t expect you to follow this Nutrition guide for the rest of your life eating the same foods every week, but we do expect you to learn from the guide and learn how to create the meals that you love while preparing them the healthy way. The portions guide will tell you exactly how many of each food group you need in your meals so that you can be creative and make your own meals. So experiment a little and let you r creative juices flow. Use the Nutrition Plan as a guide and learn how to make delicious, healthy meals that you can continue to make for the rest of your healthy life.
Keep us updated!

Hello John John,
Unfortunately, there are no guaranteed results with this program. The only thing we guarantee is that you will get out of the program what you put into it. Every ones body reacts differently to different foods and different exercises, so it wouldn’t be fair of me to say that you will see a major difference in body fat and weight loss. If you are going to be faithful to the workouts in P90X then you will also have to be faithful to the Nutrition Plan as well. Your diet throughout this program is just as necessary if not more than the workouts you will do. It is the foundation for having a truly healthy body.
Here is a fitness test:
http://www.beachbody.com/text/products/programs/p90x/p90xFitTest.pdf
Do the various exercises and if you can successfully complete the requirements then you are ready for the P90X. If you cannot complete the fit test then we recommend you start with Power 90, the precursor to the P90X. Many people have had great transformations by starting with Power 90 and following up with P90X. However, if you can manage, P90X will really whip you into shape.
Keep us updated John John.

hi, im interested in getting the p90x program but i have a few questions about its details. is it something i need to do at home while watching the video, or can i instead take the workout to the gym and do it there? i dont own weights/resistance bands but belong to a gym where i could use them.

Hello Zach,
The P90X program comes with a complete fitness guide that shows a list of every exercise used in the workouts, with a detailed explanation of how to perform each exercise. So you could essentially, take Tony’s workouts with you to the gym, the only thing is you’d be missing is Tony.

Hello I just have one qiuck question. I am 6′0 190 lbs and am 16 yrs old. I am starting the p90x workout as well as with a couple of my friends on the high school baseball team. I have completely dedicated myself to being prepared for the program as I know I can handle it. However I was wondering about the following the nutrition guide. I will follow it as close as possible and cut out all soft drinks and sweets, but will myself and my friends achieve the same results after 90 days if we dont follow the nutrition guide exactly?

Hi Ryland (and friends),
I can say without hesitation, that if you are not as dedicated to the nutrition plan as you are to the workout plan, then you will NOT get the same results as if you had followed both plans together. If you want the maximum benefits from this program then I would suggest doing both plans to the best of your abilities.
Keep us updated on your successes.

Hello Eddie,
First of all congratulations on your success in losing all that weight. Great job! You have the right to be a little concerned about your heart and I share those same concerns with you. I think that now that you have knocked off quite a bit of pounds, it’s time to focus on a new healthy diet. You should start to begin creating meals that will allow you to steadily lose more weight, but still give you the energy you need to get through the workouts. You can’t eat protein shakes forever, nor should you try, but you can eat healthy forever. So, sit down with your nutrition plan and start to come up with meals that you think would help you put on as little fat as possible. You’ve come this far and I know you can go the rest of the way. Let us know how it goes.
-Nate
I’m 17 and I don’t know how well I can follow the nutrition program, also I’m looking to gain muscle mass as I have basically no body fat whatsoever. Will I still see results if I eat foods similar to those on the nutrition plan and do the workouts to the best of my ability? Also, is increasing weight and lowering reps a better way to gain muscle or is it better to stick with a weight that I can do about 10 reps with?

Hi Tim,
Although we recommend that if you want to get the best results possible then you should stick to the workout plan and nutrition plan as closely as possible. If you have to deviate from the plans, then you won’t see the results you could possibly get if you had stayed with the program altogether.
As far as weights, the heavier the weights, the more mass you can put on. The lighter the weights, the more reps and the more cuts you’ll see.
Good luck Tim and keep us posted on your success.

Used to go to the gym for quite a few years, but then I got lazy and stopped. I don’t like the gym as it is always much to crowded and there is a lot of waiting around to use the equipment. Found P90X and it’s amazing. I can work out in the comfort of my own home without wasting 40-50 bucks a month on a gym membership and that money can be put towards supplements. =]
I was reading the nutrional guide and it says not to eat to get full, only eat untill your not hungry. Evertime i eat i dont eat to get full, i do my best to limit myself but when i drink a glass or two of water right after , i get full. Does this still count as not eating to get full or should i cut down how much i eat so when i do drink a glass or two of water im still not full , just not hungry.

Hello Sharma,
You are on the right track. What you’re doing right now is OK. The reason they say don’t eat till your full is because of the extra calories you will intake to get you full. Getting full with water is completely acceptable and is preferred over getting food with those extra calories. Keep up the great work.

Hello Tee,
If you’re not trying to lose weight, then you are going to want to start on phase II and do phase II for 6 weeks and phase III for 6 weeks. If you still need to shed some pounds, start at phase I and follow the plan accordingly. P90X will definitely get some mass on you, so get ready for the intense workouts.

I recently bought your product and am just waiting for it to arrive. i am so excited to get started. I am 24 years old, 5′3 and 180 lbs. I have 3 kids and they are 1 year apart. After each kid i never got the chance to loose the pregnancy weight before getting pregnant again. I just cant seem to get the weight off and have gained more since my last child was born. I know i have a lot of weight to loose and I am ready to commit to this and BRING IT!! I have tried so many diets, and work out routines that just didnt work. My friend bought this and is in love with it, so i decided to start it as well. Im really hoping for results with this!!! Its been a long time coming. I started a prescription diet pill a couple weeks ago and need a workout routine to get the best results with it. Cant wait to get started!!!
Hi! I’m a 31 year old female, small boned, fairly thin (flabby butt though), 120 lbs, 5′8″.
I’ve always been thin regardless off what I ate,but now that I’m older and my metabolism is slowing I would like to lose a couple of pounds off my butt. Please, don’t tell me that I shouldn’t be concerned about my body, given my stats. I’m not delusional, I just want to get my old butt back!
My question is that it seems like 1800 calories would be quite a bit for someone like me. P90x seems to be geared more towards men. Is it possible that I would be better off decreasing the calories?

Hello Becca,
It’s important to start off following the diet as closely as possible, to start. The diet plan is designed to give you enough energy to get you through your workouts. If after the first week you still feel like your eating too much, then gradually decrease the amount of calories you intake. The goal is to eat enough calories to get you through the workouts without putting on any pounds and that is something only you can adjust throughout trial and error.
Again, start off with 1800 and decrease as necessary, but make sure you don’t decrease to the point where you don’t have enough energy for the workouts.
Keep us posted.

Recently purchased the P90X program and I am loving it. The only problem I am having is with the nutrition plan. I travel a lot and 90% of my work out is in a motel room which is not bad, but making a chicken scrabble or a steak and arugula salad is quit impossible. I try to make some dinners and take them with me but that is not always possible any suggestions.

Hi Johnny,
The best thing we can suggest is to try and scout out the areas you are going to be traveling to before you actually get there. Find locations of healthy restaurants or grocery stores so that you can eat accordingly. Also, continue to try and make food in advance like your doing, to bring on the road with you. Other than that, there aren’t many options if you’re on the road so much. You just have to try and eat as well as you can, when you can.
Hope that helps some.

Hello Ailyn,
It really depends on how much weight you were trying to lose. The lean program helps you to gain some muscle without bulking up a lot and without losing a lot of weight. The classic plan was designed to help you lose as much fat as possible with it’s fat shredder phase. The classic will help you bulk up a little bit more than the lean program. The choice is pretty much up to you and what your desired results are.

i use p90x and im not on their diet and i am just on day 4 and i swear i can see results i use ab ripper x every night along with the regular workouts i was in the marines and was huge and got sick and lost it all so is the reason i can see results so early because i already have all the muscle tone.
I have one more question. I understand there is nothing quite like the p90x recovery formula, but right now I just can’t afford it. How important is it, and, is there ANYthing that I could eat or drink that would be a reasonable substitute? Thanks!

Hi again Becca,
Although the Recovery Formula is extremely important to rebuilding muscle, it is not the only way to rebuild muscle. Any kind of protein drink will suffice to get your muscles back in shape. Back in the days and sometimes today, people would drink raw eggs to help rebuild the muscles. So the ways are out there, you just have to be creative.

Hi Ailyn,
If you can take the fitness guide with you and do as many of the workouts as you can, while your out there. Then when you get back, depending on how far you fell off the wagon
that will determine where you start from. Also, try to eat as healthy as you can while your out there. If you eat good while you’re over there, you will be able to pick up where you left off.

Hello Dennis,
The P90X program can be done in a gym. Traditionally, people follow along with the video for the audio and visual encouragement from Tony but you can definitely do these workouts in a gym. The fitness guide that comes with the program lists all the exercises in detail so that you can do the exercises anywhere. So you will not have to buy anything but a membership, if you don’t already have one.

i know there have been many questions closely related to this, but none have hit the nail right on the head yet.
Im 6′2”, 175lbs. My metabolism is very high and i have very little body fat, but my muscles are pretty well developed (im in the military so i can do about 60 pushups and 60 situps, then run a few miles). The main reason im doing p90x is to GAIN MUSCLE MASS and get in even better shape. I briefly looked over a friends copy of the nutrition guide, and in some parts (phases i think) it recomends low calorie (1800ish) and other steps for losing weight. That is not my goal (and losing any more weight would probably be considered unhealthy for my frame) and so i dont think that part of the guide applies to me. Is there another diet i can follow, or skip to a different phase? I was thinking high protein for buidling muscle, high carb for energy, and a little bit of fats.
Thanks

Hi Justin,
If you are just interested in gaining mass and muscle than you should immediately move up to the next phase, so you can begin to gain mass right away. As far as diet, you hit the nail right on the head with the high proteins and carbs. Remember the nutrition plan is a guide and if you feel you can add to it and get better results, then that is what you need to do.
-RJ
Update:
I have completed the P90x without missing one workout. I did not follow the nutrition guide like I said before, and probably would have had better results if I had. But I started the P90x again imediately after completing it. I am hooked. I have had great results. I have lost 35 lbs and can do most of the workouts with relative ease. My questions are: Should I have waited a week or so before starting it again? If the workouts are becoming to easy, should I up my weights even more, or should I move on to the P90x plus? Either way I have become hooked to the routines and plan on doing fitness like this the rest of my life.

Hi Jeremy,
Waiting a week is a good idea to let your body rest and to take all those “New You” pictures. After that week, up the weights and maybe do the doubles program and you should be back in the swing of things in no time. If you’re looking for a greater challenge, try P90X Plus. That is an even more intense workout that will have you in even better shape than you are right now.

I’m just started the p90x work out and I was curious if using resistance bands for the work outs gave you the same result as using dumbbells or does one help more than the other? Also i was looking at the nutrition guide and it doesnt give any recipes or information on week 4 meals. There are 3 levels of meals for each phase but there is not a fourth level. What am I supposed to eat for the fourth week (recovery week)?

June 1, 2009 at 10:57 am
Hello Thomas,
The resistance bands give you just as good, if not better, results than dumbbells. They provide you with a nice fluid motion for your arms and legs. The bands act as a guide to keep your arms and legs stabilized during your workouts. Plus the bands give you the opportunity to do more exercises that you won’t be able to do with dumbbells, such as cable pulls and reverse chin-ups.
As far as the nutrition plan is concerned, that 4th week is where you can be creative. Follow the portions and create a menu that is perfect for you. If you follow the portions, you can’t go wrong and you can still enjoy the foods of your choice.

One year ago, I weighed 205 lbs yet I am only 5′9″ (At 22 years of age, probably not good). I started running and now I weigh 165 lbs and run 7-10 miles five days a week and went from having a size 36 waiste to a 32. 2 months ago I started working out as well as running. I eat healthy, do cardio, and work with weights yet it feels, and in my opinion looks, like my body has stopped progressing From just watching commercials about p90x, I feel as though this product can do wonders for me. But I have reservations about buying a product advertised via infomercials. Am I in good enough shape to start this routine? Are the advertised results real? A this point, I am really excited about the potential that p90x has. But from a year of working my butt off, I now know how hard I have to work and can not afford a disappointment. Can someone help ease this stress?

Hi Chris,
If you do not have suitable door frames, we recommend that you get the resistance bands and and upgrade kit and you can use your actual closed door as a stand to do reverse pull-ups. That way you don’t even have to worry about your door frame at all.

I want the butt, abs, legs and arms I used to have before the baby. Will this package cover it all for me? I will make sure to follow the nutrition plan.. and will definetly stick with the DVD’s.. but I want to make sure I do everything correctly. So I guess my questions are.. 1. will this selected package do what I want? and 2. do I do all the DVD’s every day or just one DVD a day, and switch up the DVD’s?. Thank you!!

I am about 150 lbs. so can p90x help with gaining weight?
I just completed my first round of p90x. I am 49 years old and I am in the best shape of my life. I can do pull ups, pushups and I can now keep up with all the workouts. This was the best thing I have ever bought. I was 6′1″ and 220 pounds when I satrted. I followed the diet plan and pushed myself to the max and it paid off. I now weight 190 pounds and can out do the high school athletes that I coach. Also just prchased P90x+, but have not started yet. I am taking a week or so off to recover totally before I began. No real questions just wanted to give some positiver feed back to this site.
I am a long-distance runner….usually run 4 days a week, 7 miles 3 of the days and about 10-15 on my long run day. I just started P90X yesterday…love it. I’m wanting to know if it is okay for me to continue my running while doing the P90X program. I don’t want to over-do it, but I REALLY don’t want to give up my running, as it’s my passion. Thanks for any imput!!

Hello Caroline,
By all means, continue with running. You can simply substitute your running for the cardio workouts. The cardio you produce during your runs will only help you get into better shape while doing the P90X program. It’s as good as doing the doubles program. So keep up the great work and continue to bring it.

Hi Eliseo,
When you get P90X, it comes with a meal plan that has many meals inside. On top of that there is a couple of pages of food substitutes and items that you can replace if you are not to keen on that particular food. You can also check out some of the other blogs on here for tips and recipes, that will help you on the meal plan. The best part is, the system is set up on portions. So as long as you follow the portions guide in the Nutrition Plan, you can eat what you want. There is no limit to the recipes you can have.

So I’m reading that if you are just looking to put on mass that you should skip or shorten the first phase of the program. I’m starting P90x next Monday, so my question is; how much should I shorten it, or if I skip it altogether, do i make the other two phases longer?
I’m 6′2” 180 lbs. I don’t have much fat to lose.
Thanks for the input.

Hi Cliff,
If you feel like you do not need to lose any weight, then you are going to take the 12 weeks and spend 6 weeks on Phase II and 6 on phase III. If you want to take off a couple of pounds or inches, then 2 weeks the max on Phase I and split the remaining Phases into 5 weeks. That should be perfect for you.

I am Staring P90X on Monday. What can I do to gain muscle mass with the program?

Hello Alex,
If you’re looking to just gain muscle mass and not lose weight, then start with phase II and go slow on your reps. That will build the mass and muscle that you’re looking for. Also extend yourself on your exercises. Do the Yoga workouts and stretch workouts and make your body more limber and flexible. The more your body can bend the more muscle and mass you can build.

My wife and I are going through p90x for the second time. We completed the first 90 days just before she got pregnant. We have not worked out in more than a year, but after our son was born, my wife dropped the pounds quicker that anyone I have ever seen; we both attribute this to getting in great shape (via p90x) before getting pregnant. Anyways, working out is more difficult now that we have limited time, but my real question concerns the recovery drink. We both love it, but my wife can no longer drink it due to becoming lactose intolerant. The whey is a dairy product and it just kills her. What can she drink as an alternative? Any chance of you guys developing a lactose-free recovery drink? It is really not fair to her when she sees me drinking mine and she can’t have one of her own. Thanks, Caleb

Hi Shaun,
One think you can do to cut down on the weight loss is change the Nutrition Plan a little. The first phase of the plan is called the “fat shredder” phase. This phase of the plan gives you little calories and very little carbs so when you work out, your body starts to take energy from reserves. This is where the fat burning comes from. You can skip this phase all together. Start with phase two. Also, during your workouts, go for less reps with heavier weights. This will add bulk in stead of giving you a more lean look.
-Mike
Hi!
I wrote a couple of times before, thanks for the help!
Im on my third week of P90X and I have not missed a single workout. I’ve followed the nutrition plan religiously, except I usually eat 1700 calories instead of 1800. According to the body fat tester, I haven’t lost ANY fat. I know I need to be patient, bit I’m just wondering if this is normal. My female roommate is losing fat, but I’m not. Is it possible that because I have less fat to lose than her( not much though) that my body doesn’t want to give up those last pounds? I’m female, 31, 124 lbs, 5′8″. Thanks for any feedback you can give.

Hi Becca,
There are a few things to take into consideration. First, many people do not start to see their body fat percentage go down or see visual results until week 8. You may have to be a little bit more patient! Second, judging by your height, weight, and age, you probably don’t have too much fat to loose. Your body mass index or BMI is a little low. You may not notice a change in your body until you start to get some muscle definition. Lastly, if you are talking about actual pounds coming off, well, the scale can be deceiving. Muscle weighs more that fat. As you go through this program, you will be building up you muscles and your weight may not make any sense you to at all. You may find that you will gain a few pound at a certain point during this workout. That does not at all reflect negatively on your workouts. The best measure would be the body fat tester.
Just a little tip. Go online and find a site where you can calculate your BMI, body fat index, etc. You may already be at or below the “ideal weight” for your height and age. I know everyone has their own goals for their own body and fitness. This may just help wipe away some doubts you may have about your progress with the program.

Hey guys, I’m 6′2″ 300 lbs and looking at starting P90X. I’ve been in public safety for a few years now and have suffered due to the constant eating on the go and fast food. I used to play soccer several times a week and rugby along with that. Because of this my knees aren’t in the best of shape. I know that losing weight will help my knee pain, but I need to find a fitness program that won’t do more damage to my knees. My main goal is to be able to play soccer and rugby again but better than when I left them both behind.

Hello Josh,
If you have serious knee pain or have been treated for a knee injury, the P90X may not be right for you. This program involves a lot of jumping and bending at the knee. If you just have some discomfort, you could take the P90X fit test. Also, try doing some jump squats (jump straight up then land in a squatting position). If you can do several of these without knee pain, you may be alright, but it would be best to talk to your doctor before starting this program.

Hey everyone, I am wondering if P90X will work without the nutrition plan. I don’t eat junk food or drink pop. I do eat meals high in protein and drink nothing but water with the odd orange juice drink or apple juice with breakfast. I am wondering if this will work to see the results I want for this program. I weigh 161 lbs and am 5′8. Let me know what you think please.

Hi Josh,
The Nutrition Plan is pretty important to the whole P90X experience. Especially for people who really need to loose weight and really transform their body. This plan was specially designed to give you the correct nutrition you need to actually make it through these workouts all while allowing you to lower your body fat %. A diet high in protein is important if you are doing a program like the P90X for muscle building and repair. If you are not planing on using the Nutrition Plan, at least take a look at it and maybe take some tips from it. Use it for meal ideas or just as a general guide if you are not sure that what your are eating is good enough. The workouts will definitely whip you into shape. But most of the visual results come from the workouts along with good nutrition.

Hi Bill,
With the P90X, you will be doing a good amount of chest exercises. All sorts of push-ups and chest working resistance training. If you are concerned with that particular part of your body, you have the option of choosing the weight you use and the number of reps you do. If Tony is going to do 30 push-ups, go for 35! That is the beauty of this program. If you want to do more or less than the people on the DVD, you absolutely can. They encourage it. But yes. You will get a great chest workout with the P90X.

I am considering purchasing P90X for my husband (24y/o) and myself(22 y/o)…He is already in great shape but unfortunately I am not…I was in really good shape when I got pregnant thanks to Yoga Booty Ballet and my local gym but now I don’t have time for the gym with a 3 month old and the YBB isn’t doing it for me this time…I’m 5′4 and 200lbs…I wear it pretty well but its apparently not very healthy so my question is can P90X work for someone like me and get me back to a healthy 130ish area?

Hi Michelle,
The P90X may be too intense for you at this time. BUT, there is a fitness test you can take to determine wether or not you are ready. Try the test at the following link. If you can pass the test, you are ready for the P90X.
http://www.beachbody.com/text/products/programs/p90x/p90xFitTest.pdf
If you test doesn’t go as well, try the Power 90. This is the precursor to the P90X and will give you a great start if you would like to work your way up to the P90X.
-Erin
I ordered P90x and i’m waiting for it to be delivered, but i have a ? on the nutrition plan. I work the graveyard shift so I wake up in time to fix dinner for the household and myself, eat lunch at work, and then eat breakfast a few hours before going to bed. It’s pretty backwards, but i’m wondering if this will effect me negatively? I could switch it to the normal pattern, but it would make my life complicated since I’m the only one who cooks in the house.
I’m 19, 5′5 and close to 200lbs. I want this to work so bad, because I don’t want to end up like my mom or her sisters. One is diebetic because of wieght and still refuses to take care of herself. Another has a HUGE list of problems because of her weight. I don’t want that to be my future!

Hi Samantha,
If this is your normal eating and sleeping pattern, I wouldn’t try and change it. Unless you start to work during the day. Just try and make those three meals you eat a day good ones. You can still use the Nutrition Plan, you would just have to eat on your schedule. Stick to the plan, stick with the workouts, and you will be better off after 90 days.

Hi. im jessica i bought P90X for me and my boyfriend and i am waiting on it to arrive so i have a few questions… 1. my boyfriend has a bad knee (it pops out of place)will it be too much on his knee?
2. We are in bad shape im 195lbs and 5′4 hes 220 lbs and 5′6 our cardio is pretty bad will it be hard to finish each DVD? 3. If i walk 1-5 miles a day along with the P90X program will i see better results?

Hey Jessica,
Knee problems are tough, especially when trying to work out. The P90X may not be the right choice for your boyfriend. This program is not for those with knee problems or injuries. There is a lot of bending and jumping that might aggravate a bad knee.
If you aren’t sure if you can finish a workout, try the fitness test on page 20. If you pass it, you should be able to get through the workouts. Maybe not at first, but it perfectly fine to work your way up to that point.
If you add walking to your workouts, you will probably burn a few more calories, which is always good. As long as you are getting a sufficient amount of energy from what you are eating to make up for that. I can’t tell you how exactly walking will effect your results, but it can’t be in a bad way. Walking is very good for you and you should be doing it everyday.

Hello Navi,
As I told Jessica, adding and extra form of exercise can’t hurt, as long as you have the energy to do it. You will end up burning more calories and possibly loosing a little extra weight. As far as the results, that can’t be foretold, but jogging or walking a little everyday will do you some good.

I am on day 82 of my second go-round with P90X. At this point, it’s pretty much become part of what defines my life. Ask anyone: I’m constantly blabbing about what moves I did today and how great I feel.
I’ve gotten great results. I’m 36 and in the best shape of my life. While I wasn’t fat, I was out of shape and not feeling good at all, cardiovascularly. So far, while I’ve only lost 8 lbs, my waist size has dropped from 34 to 30 (!) and I’m pretty much ripped. I just still have a little belly fat left ’cause I just can’t stop eating ice cream. I’m trying…

Great dedication! Although you only lost 8 lbs, you have probably made greater gains in muscle mass being ripped and all! Hey, we all love ice cream! Try and eat frozen yogurt or ice cream with not so much sugar, in moderation that is!
Congratulations! Keep it going!

Hey,
I want to be toned and in shape for me but also for the fact that I am getting married and want to look good. I am 5′1 and weigh 128 lbs. I want to loose about 5-10 lbs and have a toned stomach. I have strong legs and arms already. Is P90X suitable for me?
I do not want to have muscles liek a body builder because I think that is gross on women… is P90X going to make me look like that?
Is there any way I can avoid that?
Thanks!

Hi Cass,
The great thing about the P90X is that it is flexible. You wont end up looking bulky unless you wanted to. The key to lean muscle mass is lighter weights and more reps. You can also try the Lean approach which focuses more on cardio and less on resistance training. This approach is for people mainly concerned with weight loss. The P90X classic approach is more of an all around athletic fitness program.
The stomach area is always harder for women. The P90X has a great ab workout, but if you don’t eat right, it will be hard to see those ab muscles under a flabby belly! The key is to try and lower you body fat percentage and build muscle at the same time. The fat will start to disappear and the abs will start to shine through. The Nutrition Plan plays an important part in body fat loss with this program. The first phase of this plan is actually called the “fat shredder” phase. It gives you just enough calories for the day as well as your workout all wile allowing your body to take some energy from fat reserves.
Good luck! I know you will look great for your special day!
-Erin
Hi,
My husband and I are considering doing P90X but we both have very busy, sometimes unpredictable, schedules ( like most people) ! My question is – what difference does it make if you take your rest day on a day other than day #6. If we had the flexibility to choose our rest day I think we’d have an easier time sticking to the routine.
My other question is can I find a sample of the nutrition guide online?
Thank you!

Hi Heidi,
As long as you are getting the correct workouts in for each week done, it would be ok to have your rest/stretch on another day besides day 6.
The Nutrition Plan or a sample plan is not available on line, but there are some great grocery lists in the Nutrition portion of this blog.

Hello,
I have been thinking about trying P90X for a while now. I am trying to get in shape before the police academy. The commercials look promising and it has been recommended to me several times. However, I’m not in too great of shape. I am 160lbs and 5′4. I do go to the gym 4 times a week but it is mostly toning routines.
I want to slim down a little, lose inches, and tone up first THEN gain mass.. Will this product do this for me? I am great at following plans and a full time online college student so I will be able to do this.
Please get back to me soon, I have six months to get in shape and would really like to try this if it will do what I want.

Hi Lindsay,
I think this program will work great for you. If you are good at sticking to schedules and will be able to follow the Nutrition Plan, your golden! With the P90X, the slimming down usually comes first, then the toning, then the mass (if you want mass). This would actually be perfect for you. As long as you have the time an dedication, which it seems like you do, you will do very well with this program.
Since you have 6 months, you can probably go for two rounds and get even greater results!
-Mike

Hey Jordan,
There is really no official age limit, but I would say that it is best that your parents review the program and make sure it is safe for you. This is an intense program and it is important that you are controlled and do the moves correctly. Perhaps one of your parents can do the program with you.

Hi Sue,
There are some who do two rounds of the P90X to get greater results or just to maintain what they have gained. There is also the P90X Plus which is the next step that uses the same ideas, but the workouts are more challenging. Or, you can take the workouts that were especially beneficial to you and make your own schedule. Once you get to that point, after the 90 days is over, you will have a good idea of what you need to do to stay in shape.
-Mike
im about to start this program. im about 30lbs over weight and was wondering if i would start to see abs after the first 90 days.
im getting ready to start p90x and i was wondering if i am 25lbs overweight if i would start to see abs after first 90 days.
Hey Nick,
That all depends. Everyone is different. A person that is not particularly out of shape will have better end results than a person who may be a few pounds overweight. The gains might not be as much, but the end result may appear to be greater. Do that make any sense? Abs are tough. It’s not just doing crunches. You need to lower your overall body fat percentage and build those muscles to actually see them. If you stick to the workouts, push yourself AND try and follow the nutrition plan, your abs will be better off at the end of 90 days.
-Mike
I am going to be ordering p90x real soon i had some questions though before i order it. First off i don’t know my physical limitations as well as my bf percentage are there anyways i can find out if I’m ready for p90x. Secondly I’m training to be a forest firefighter will p90x train me for endurance or will it at least compliment running after the workout session? Lastly i was wondering if i skipped a day of training because of something would i be able to pick up where i left off or would it have severe effects on my results?

Hi John,
If you are unsure if you will be able to do the P90X, take the fitness test. If you can past the test, you are ready. If not, you might want to try the Power 90 or the 10 Minute Trainer.

The P90X will certainly improve your overall athletic ability and performance. If you are up to it, it can give you an advantage in your training. Missing 1 day won’t hurt too much. You can use that as your rest day if you can pre-schedule them, or pick up where you left off.

Hi Bobby,
Abs are tough. They key is to get rid of the fat so the muscle can shine through. The P90X workouts combined with the Nutrition Plan can give you a great midsection. How great depends on you. If you really follow the food plan and really push yourself working out, you body will start to transform. Get yourself a body fat tester and a tape measure. This is the best way to measure your progress with the P90X rather than a scale.

Hi Angel,
Plyometrics is a definitely a cardio workout, but you will be working you leg muscles, no doubt about that! You will be burning energy but if you make small adjustments to the nutrition plan, you can avoid loosing too much fat. For example, your body takes energy from carbohydrates in your body first. When the carbs are gone, energy is taken from fat reserves. This is why a low carb diet along with exercise will help you loose weight. If you don’t want to burn any fat, you might want up your carbs slightly. Not too much!
-Mike
I am very interested in this program. The question I have is how hard would this program be to follow traveling. I travel 310+ days a year and live in hotels and eat out almost every meal. Hi Chris,
This could be difficult! If you can spare at least 1 hour in your hotel room, you can at least do the workouts. You would just need some resistance bands and a band upgrade kit. This way you can do the chin-up and dumbbell exercises with the bands. They travel better!
As far as your eating is concerned, this may be the hard part. You would really have to plan ahead. There are quick options in the guide that may come in handy, but you best bet would be to try you hardest to follow the portions approach. You can try and fit your take out or restaurant meals into your daily servings as best as you can. It might be tricky, but it will be worth it in the end.

I am contemplating buying P90x, but like most individuals, I have a very busy life of work and travel. I know your suggestion is to dedicate yourself, and in theory that works, but reality is certain weeks are different than others. So, my question is this…if for some reason I can only work out 4 or 5 days a week instead of six, do I just continue on the same track, knowing that I may be on day 8 of the actual DVDs and program, while I may be on calendar day 11 or 12? Or if I miss some days/workouts – do I change the order? In summary do I maintain the same order knowing it might take me 110 days instead of 90? Hopefully my question make sense.
Thanks!

Hello Kelly,
Your reality is like many others. It can be hard to find that time to workout. The US has the highest obesity rate because we are too busy to work out and we like to eat on the go (and too much). If you have to skip a day or two, I would pick up where you left off rather than skipping workouts. It is important to do them in order, so it may take you a little more time to finish.

Hi guys, im really skinny and I am on day 2 of my p90X workout. I can already tell that i am going to be burning alot of fat, i am afraid that at the end of my 90 days i will be even skinnier than before. Is P90X meant for skinny people? I dont want to look ripped and skinny. I was thinking that mabye i could just skip the cardio workouts so that my body can keep some fat. My metabolism is ridiculosely high so I am not worried about gaining unnecessary fat.

Hello Jack,
P90X will in fact help you loose weight, if you are in that position.

So when you say I can skip Phase 1 altogether, do you mean skip Phase 1 of the diet plan? Or Phase 1 of the actual workout?

Hi Jack,
Sorry if I wasn’t clear! Skip Phase 1 of the Nutrition Plan, not the workouts.

ok im on my 3rd week of p90x classic version. im 6′3 and i weigh 230 pounds my goal is to slim down to about 210 but get some muscle tone at the same time. Is the classic version the way to go for the results that i want? ive lost about 5 pounds in 2 weeks i dont know if thats bad or good cause im gaining muscle which weighs more then fat. im seeing alot more change in my muscle but not really much change in my weight. i guess i just have to stick to it and be patient…any suggestions?

Hi Cody,
Take your own advise and stick with it and be patient. The best way to measure your success with this program is with a body fat tester. The scale can sometimes be confusing. As you start to loose fat, your weight will go down, but when you start to build muscle, it can go back up. Using a body fat tester will let you know that you are burning fat and exactly how much. Use a tape measure to measure your arms, legs, and waist. Be sure to write everything down!!

In regards to the nutritional plan, I’ve done workout videos before with these plans included, however I have found that they aren’t condusive to on the go lifestlyes. I mean quite frankly, I’m probably out of shape because I just grab something unhealthy and go. Are some of the foods suggested in these plans quick and easy or closer to slave over a hot stove??

Hi Shannon,
Yes there is. The Nutrition Plan offers a quick options guide that gives great examples of quick at home meals as well as good choices for eating on the go. This quick options guide is located towards the back of the Nutrition Plan.

Im 16, 6ft tall 175lbs and im a skater which involes a lot of leg movement.. My legs are already muscular, its my upper body I want to know about…. I can feel a 6pack under the small layer of fat and im trying to tone my arms chest and back…..will this system tone my body with good results? If so is there an estimated time you think it would take?

Hello Raymon,
The P90X will help you tone and build your upper body. There are workouts included in this program that are focused on just that. The cardio workouts and the Nutrition plan will help you loose that layer of fat that has been hiding your abs. This program is 90 days, but people do see a change as soon as 2-3 weeks into it.

I do not have this yet, but thinking about trying it, the problem I have though is, I really have no where to put the pull up bar, I have one doorway in my small apartment and it’s in a very small area, and no where near the tv. Is this going to be a problem? or there a way around that?

Hello Victoria,
There is an alternative to the Chin-Up Bar which is the resistance bands along with the upgrade kit, but that too has to be hooked up to a door. Is there anyway you can securely anchor a resistance band somewhere in your apartment? Something you can hook a rubber loop around and pull without anything coming out of the wall. Let me know what you have to work with near your TV, we can try to find a solution for you.

reading all of the reviews I am really thinking about buying this product. Im 5′1, 140lbs and i want to lose about 10-15lbs, get toned up and get a six pack. Im afraid if I do p90x i will gain weight and get bulky def not what I want. Any advice..should i still buy or not?

Hello Cierra,
Bulky muscles is not the definite end result of the P90X. This program is flexible and can cater to many different people’s fitness goals. Bulky vs. lean muscle seems to be on the minds of many potential P90X’ers.
Heavy weights, 8-10 reps = BULKY
Lighter weights, 12-15 reps = LEAN
That’s all there is to it. For weight loss, it is important to follow the Nutrition Plan. This diet will help you maximize fat burn by calculating your nutritional level and giving you exactly what you need nutritionally and allow your body to take energy from fat reserves.
If you want to loose weight, more importantly-lower your body fat percentage, and get toned, the P90X is a good choice.
-Mike
Hello, I have been doing p90x for a bit over a month now…and I am bringing it everyday (except sunday – stretch x). I am also following the nutrition plan, not perfectly, I make my own meals instead of some of the recipes that are given, but I eat healthy, and I eat clean…I’ve always been skinny fat, thin all over, with a gut…my stomach has gone down a tiny bit, but when I see peoples results on youtube, i get discouraged – I keep pushing play and I keep bringing it…But I feel as though I may be doing something wrong…
breakfast – healthy oatmeal cereal + banana.
snack – protein shake with skim milk and low fat yogurt + berries.
Lunch – turkey+lettuce+mustard on whole wheat wraps or tuna sandwitches on flax seed bread.
Recovery drink – protein shake with no fat skim milk.
Dinner – chicken, baked potatoe, salad or a low fat vegitarian bean burger or tuna or turkey sandwitches.
snack – no fat cottage cheese.
the only “junk” I put into my system is 2 beers a week, some low fat peanut butter and rice cakes, a tiny bit of ketchup 2 times a week when I eat bean burgers and a bit of bbq sauce (its the summer, I need my bbq) lol
I do not use butter at all, if im cooking, I use extra virgin olive oil.
I drink mostly water, occasional glass of v8.
Thats pretty much all that goes into my mouth…
any feedback would be great.’
I have also read that most people quit after one month because they do not see much progress, and that many ppl start to see most results during phase 2…but the youtube videos I see contradict this.
I’m not planning on quitting, as a matter of fact, im addicted, I hate it, but I love it…but I would like to know if you have any advice for me.
Thank you in advance!

Hello JM,
It sounds like you are on the right track. Some people don’t see any visible results until about week 8, some people start to loose weight in the first week. It all depends on the person. Your diet is pretty important but yours seems to be ok. If you don’t follow the nutrition plan exactly, at least follow the daily servings chart. It is important to get the correct amount of protein, cabs, vegetables, fruits, dairy, etc. for this program even if you are choosing the foods for yourself. Maybe it’s time you increase the intensity of the workout. Up some of your reps, go up 5 lbs with your weights. Try adding 1 more cardio routine to your schedule to burn some extra calories. Do you have a body fat tester and tape measure? This is the best way to measure your progress. The scale can be deceiving at times. The amount of fat you may be loosing may not be visible right away. Don’t be discouraged, keep going!

Hi, I’m looking to start p90x soon, and just wondering if doing Doubles for the first phase, then Classic for the last 2 phases would be a viable plan? I start school at the beginning of September, so figured I could do Doubles for the 1 month I have left. Just looking for suggestions!

Hello Ryan,
P90X Doubles Phase 1 is actually identical to P90X Classic Phase 1. The extra cardio starts with phase 2. If you want to add some extra cardio workouts to classic phase 1, feel free.
-Mike
Ok, So i have purchased P90X and plan on doing it all of course. I have lost 40kg in the past 4 months and feeleing fantastic, and now that i am back to a better weight and am full of energy as i was playing sports at my upper weight.
Now, my question is based on wanting to do P90X with my brother and my other training for my sport outside of this. Now would doing other weight training outside of this systems schedual effect my results because it could effect the muscle confusion technique.
OR
Is it more worth my while doing P90X system twice daily (if i can handle it; feeling i can and would not push further than my body can stand) because i am required to train on site for work.
Thanks for any kind of response in advance!

Hello Ricky,
If you can handle adding more workouts to your day, go for it. Just be sure to alternate muscle groups from day to day to allow for recovery. If you are training for a specific sport, I would do the P90X once, then work on your training for that sport. If anything, this will add more of a variety to your workout.
-Mike
i just received my p90x and i’m going to wait another week to do it because i have to purchase my chin-up bar and some weights. but mwhat i’m not understanding about this program is how do you decide which dvd to do on which day? is it in the guide?

Hi Kamessia,
Yes. The order in which you are to do these workouts is in the guide. There are three approaches you can choose from, and from there, each of the 90 days has an assigned workout.

Hey Willis,
Check out the following link for P90X products:
http://www.extremebodyworkout.com/p90x-products.php
You will need either resistance bands or dumbbells, and the chin-up bar. You can also use the resistance bands along with the band upgrade kit to do modified versions of the chin-up exercises if you cannot use the bar in your home. You don’t need a whole lot of room. If you can do two lunges in any direction (or at least two), you will have enough room.

Hi Vince,
Using the P90X will help you to decrease your body fat and increase you muscle mass. But beware, the P90X is not for beginners! Try the fitness test first. If you can pass this test, you are ready to tackle this program.

Hello Matt,
This depends on your current fitness level. Take the P90X fit test. If you can pass it, you will be able to do the P90X. If not, you are better off with the Power 90 which is the precursor to the P90X with the same ideas.

Hello, I am about to buy P90X… however I have gynecomastia. I would like to know if P90X will at least help reduce the look of the gyno ? I know that the only way to get rid of gyno is by surgery, but I am ready to give a try to anything that will help it look better.
Oh and BTW I am 6”7″ and ~220 lbs… don’t know if I was supposed to add that. Sorry.

I’m 5′4 and 145 pounds and i already have a lot of thigh muscles from being a gymnast few years back but i dont want to increase them to how they used to be..Is there specific workouts that just focus on you being lean rather than increasing muscle mass? i still have a lot of muscle left over..

Hello Caitlin,
If your main focus is not gaining muscle mass, try P90X Lean. This is the same program as the P90X, but the workouts are arranged a little differently. P90X Lean focuses on the cardio workouts much more than the resistance workouts for maximum calorie burn. How much weight you loose depends on the individual person, the intensity in which you do this program, and your diet. Following the Nutrition Plan is key when it comes to loosing weight. You need to make sure you are fueling yourself for these workouts, but also not eating stuff you don’t need that will end up turning into fat and slowing your progress. I hope this helps!

I’m 17 and im about 208lbs but i am only big on the upper and lower abdominals, chest area, and in the face. Arms and legs are average size little muscular. I want to to drop more fat before i start building muscle and using this program. Is there another program for me to use to drop this fat first or will this program help me. I really want to get rid of the fat first.

Hello Richard,
The P90X program will definitely help you do both! Please see the info below for more details:
The P90X diet provides you with the right combination of foods so that your body has the energy it needs during the program. It’s broken down into 3 phases.
While P90X is a 90 day workout you may decide to alter your choice and timing of the phases for what works best for you.
The 3 phases of the P90X diet are flexible and aim reduce fat, provide energy and give you long term success.
The P90X diet offers 3 different approaches for each of the 3 phases of the nutrition plan. This provides you with the ability to choose which approach works best for you. Feel free to choose one approach for the entire system or alternate based on your lifestyle.
Approach 1: “The Portion Approach”
This P90X diet approach is for those who don’t have a lot of time or the patience to prepare a meal that requires more than a few steps. If you don’t like to cook this is the approach for you.
Approach 2: “The Meal Plan Approach”
This P90X diet approach takes the guess work out of your daily food preparation. The included P90X Nutrition Guide provides you with daily meal plans, and a variety of delicious and healthy recipes.
Approach 3: “The Quick Option Approach”
We all get busy from time to time, some of us more than others. This P90X diet approach offers some quick food options that require minimal to no effort at all. You might be a busy person but you MUST EAT TO SUCCED WITH P90X. If you battle with your schedule the Quick Option Approach may be your best solution.
The P90X Nutrition Guide has detailed info on each approach and is the key to eating healthy and providing your body with the proper nutrition you need over the next 90 days.

Hi Josh,
There is really no official age limit, but I would say that it is best that your parents review the program and make sure it is safe for you. The P90X is an intense program and it is important that you are controlled and do the moves correctly.
Chances are you’re not quite ready for P90X yet and that’s OK! In time, with dedication to improve your health and fitness level, you’ll definitely get there. We suggest you start off with one of our other programs that are less intense and work your way up to P90X. Power 90 is a great program and is the perfect stepping stone to P90X. We offer a 30 day money back guarantee if you decide it’s not right for you. We look forward to getting you started soon and we wish you the very best in your endeavor to becoming a healthier you!

My husband and I will be purchasing the P90X as we’re excited about what we hear.
I currently workout with the fitness on demand channel, and I exercise daily and I give it my all each time. I saw results at first, but am still “soft” in some areas and can’t seem to get rid of my belly and hips. With this system, am I to workout in the morning or evening for the best results? How long before I would start to see some results?? Some reviews state they saw results in 2 weeks. I am on the thin side and would hope that it would give me results sooner rather than later.
I’ve been so committed to my workouts and am discouraged that my results aren’t more dramatic. It seems like nothing ever works for me, and I am a healthy person with good nutritional habits.
Looking forward to starting the program and I hope this does it for me!
Thank you for your time.

Hi, me and my buddy ryan have being doing P90x for 3 days now, and i can feel the burn and i love it, i am 265 lbs 5′11″, i have been dieting for 3 weeks. i was wondering, i don’t follow the nutrition plan, i have been sticking to my regular diet plan of eating about 30-35 total fat a day and eating alot of chicken, fruits and vegs, i was wondering is this good for me or will i not see results with my current diet. Also, i know P90x will help me lose weight, but will it help me gain muscle or do i have to go start lifting at the gym, becuase i would like to gain some muscle.
I’m thinking about buying the P90X. I’ve been a bit of a slug the past 9 months or so and want to do something to lose 10-15 pounds and feel better about myself. My question is this: is the pullup bar essential to the program? I don’t really have a place to install it. Are there alternate exercises instead of using the pullup bar? Thanks for the info.
Hello! I’m 26 yrs old and lost about 40 lbs on a pill that the doctor gave me. I have nothing but lose skin. Will this help me tighten it up? I know i lost the weight really fast!!!!! I just don’t know what else to do! Can yo help?
I’m one of those people that are not motivated by working out alone. Has there been any thought to have this program tought in a gym with a group of people (ex. LesMills workouts – bodypump, etc.). Or have 90-day workshops where your staff travel to different locations for 90-days and teach a group?
I want to lose around 20 pounds but also get muscle and abs should I start with classic or lean?
Can I do p90x classic one month and then lean the next two ?
Hi, my husband and I are considering purchasing this program. I have a 8 month old and of course the problem are is my stomach. Now I usually do cardio for 30 or 45 minutes a day through taebo tapes. I’ve seen results but I just can’t stay committed or keep a balanced eating habit. Plus my days starts 3 a.m. Every day and by the end of the working day I’m just to tired to do anything else beside provide for my son. Will this program work for me
I’ve been working out for almost 4 years with very little results in my belly. I’m convinced it’s my diet, I make up in eating what I lose in a workout, I know this. I am a runner and also cross-train about 5-6 days/week, on average. My legs usually look pretty good, but could use some improvement. It’s mostly my belly; I had a c-section almost 4 years ago and I am now stuck with fat and excess skin that hangs over my scar. I always look a little bit pregnant.
Do you think P90X, along with the nutrition plan, will get rid of that belly hang and make my belly flat or am I faced with a huge plastic surgery bill?
Also, what are the max carbohydrates per day at any given phase of the program?
Hi. My husband and I started P90X 18 days ago. I have been carefully watching what I eat by using the meal plan. A typical day for me is 1% cottage cheese with fruit for breakfast, some mini rice cakes for a snack, salad with some protein for lunch and a dinner consisting of a protein, veggie (no butter or oil) and a whole grain carb.
We do the lean program and haven’t missed a day! Everyday I am able to “bring it” more and to do more reps.
I have only lost 5 lbs. and I could lose 20! The past three days, no loss. Am I doing all that I can or will continuing the program help with my weight loss? Any other suggestions you have are welcome.
However, I have lost some size because there are clothes that fit me much better now.
Thanks.
I just got the program and have no interest in the cardio exercises. I want to cut those out and do the weight training ones, 2x a week instead. So Chest and Back, Shoulders and Arms, Legs and Back, Chest and Back, Shoulders and Arms, Legs and Back, and Rest Sunday.
Is this advisable for someone who just wants to build muscle and gain weight, is already lean with minimal body fat, and is playing basketball an hour a day.
Hey I have a couple of questions about the P90X system. I am 16, weigh about 115 lbs and do everything I can to put on weight. I was wondering if I worked out with the P90X but didnt follow the diet plan, if I would get decent results. I still consume massive protein during the day (including a protein shake a day) just am not following the nutrition guide. I would just like to see better results than working out normally for 90 day, is pretty much my goal. Will I see good results if I really put in the effort and just skip the Yoga X for a day to rest? I find that thats the hardest out of all of them. I like the Kenpo X the best by far out of them all:)
By the way I really love this system and look forward to working out with Tony everyday.
Thanks, Steven
i was wondering if i could use the p90x system and if it would work because i am 14 and my parents are also using it. Plus i was also wondering if you would still see great results if you didnt use the meal plan but eat to your best ability?
P90x is the best if you would not give up and set up your mind for 3 months, than you got it what u looking 4 guys. i loose 40pound and now i have 6 pack instead of one hahahah
jus eat 4 eggs a day, salad, use skim milk w/ weigh protein and drink lot of water. may be u wana take some protein bars thats it
Hello Justin,
It is perfectly OK with you working out with your parents as well. Just make sure you don’t over exert yourself and if you feel like you can’t continue, STOP and finish up later. As far as the meal plan is concerned, you will get good results, but nowhere near the great results you would get if you followed the nutrition plan. Enjoy your workouts!

Just got started yesterday. I am 39 yrs old, 5′ 7″, 190 lbs. I am doing this with my son, he is 13 yrs old, 4′ 9″, 90 lbs. First: Should my son be doing this. He is more athletic then me and is looking build up some before the spring baseball season. He was able to handle the first day of work outs better then me doing the classic version. Second: I know the nutrition plan will work for me but is there something I can adjust for my son to add weight. Since we are on different ends of the spectrum I didn’t think following the same routine as me would help him in the way he wants.
Thank you,

i am a athlete and already have a low body fat percentage. i am just a active person and stay thin. i am a bit muscular but want to get bigger. i feel that the kenpo, x stretch, and yoga are holding me back from getting bigger. should i just not do them because i only want size and already get enough cardio.
can i just do each bodybuilding workout 2 times a week and skip the rest.

Hey just a quick question. I’m 18, 6′1, and 140 pounds with not much muscle mass to speak of. My goal is to be around 165-175 pounds with muscle mass. I’m not intrested in losing weight. but gaining muscle mass. Im on my 6th day of the program (Kenpo X) and im sore as heck. I wasent quite set on the nutrition plan because its difficult to work into my day. But I planned on have a cereal breakfast with a bagel and cream cheese, a PB sandwich for a snack befor lunch, for lunch generally pasta/high carb foods, another pb sandwich befor dinner, then a high protein dinner with a protein shake ( i eat dinner after i workout). Does this seem like the right approach to helping me acheive my goal? Quite a big question now that i read it but o well!
Thanks, Mike

HI, I’m 28 years old, female, “petite” (approx 5 4) and started off at 115 lbs, 19% body fat. I’ve been exercising for the last decade, started off with cardio (jog, power walk, bike) at 3-5 times a week for an hour, it turned into 7 days a week in the last 5-6 years for about 90 min a day. For the last 1.5 years I’ve also taken up resistance training and doubled my strength.
I started p90x Lean version (simply b/c while I love plyo and can do it, the chest and back I cannot optimally benefit from b/c I can only do four chin ups an zero unassisted pull ups) about 6 weeks ago.
I have not lost weight, in fact I was about 114 when I started so I might have gained one pound. I normally eat lean and I continued doing so, trying to eat more protein but I cannot say I followed the plan to the t. Again though, I normally do not eat junk or fried stuff (yuck) and eat grilled veggies, Mediterranean salads (I am MEditerranean European), yogurt, lots of fish and lean protein, and fruit. Sometimes red wine here and there.
I eat around 1700-2200 a day.
I added half an hour of cardio and one time a week resistance training to my Lean X program and did not miss any workouts.
However, like I said I have gained one pound. HOwever, I noticed that all my pants started fitting loosely and upon measuring mysel discovered a loss of about 3/4th of an inch overall-hips, thighs, waist (which was already 24 inches to begin with-yep the Mediterranean pear shape).
My goal is to get a toned look by going down to 110 lbs or so and 15% body fat-I don’t care if I don’t lose weight but lose fat percentage (yes this can happen I know.). I especially want to spot reduce-which as we know is a myth but will only occur if fat percentage decreases.
The trouble is that despite not losing weight, people tell me I’m looking very skinny and that my face looks sunken in. What can I do?
I do want to stick to this program, I love it . I also don’t understand how I would have gained a pound and yet ended up looking skinnier than I was before (and I was slim to begin with like I said).
I am not sure what my body fat percentage is now b/c I checked 2 weeks ago-so it might have decreased from 20% to 19..not sure what the beginning percentage was but the weight had been 114.
Perhaps it’s gone below 19% now.
I just want to look muscular and slim without looking sick -without giving the impression of ‘anorexic’ and I am starting to get these types of comments…:(
I am very interested in the P90X program and would love to get started with it as soon as possible. I do however, have a question. Thanksgiving (and Christmas, I guess) are upcoming, and the meals associated with these holidays are obviously not conducive to the meal regimen outlined in the program. My parents would probably be mad at me if, when I finally came home from school to enjoy time and meals with family, I wouldn’t be able to eat any of it. I was wondering if I began the P90X program shortly, if I would be able to eat those foods, and if not, if there is a worthy substitute.
